That pic of the Hindenberg Wall looks like it was taken over Olsobip or a bit further up tucked against the wall over Bolivip. I lived in Tabubil in 1979 for 6 months, flying SEG after Kennecott and before OTML started. Only "outside" contact was when Dangerous Dave Merklin used to fly the weekly twotter from POM with our freezer. Special VFR up the Alice as only he could do! :}

Yeah, not many bitumen strips in the mountains of PNG... probably in Irian Jaya,. Is this a Cessna Caravan? Nice flight deck, even has EGPWS by the look of it... far cry from the single ADF and fixed card thingamajig in the Talair "IFR" balus's.

Cutting edge mate.
Patair's DC3 PNB had one 'er them too.
Engineer found a place for 'er down by the FO's right kneecap. We did have a Visual Omni Range gadget that's needle shot from side to side when ya were landin' on 14 at Moresby.
Noticed it happen a coupla times while I was keepin' me eye out fer the Lightning wreck in th' swamp so we'd know where we were.

Reminds me of when a new Pommie avionics engineer arrived in Lae. Everyone was wondering why, with avionics tech's in such high demand, this bloke would come to PNG. We soon found out.

Said engineer spent his days drinking coffee and smoking, but mainly complaining about how busy he was (from the comfort of the couch in the crew room). If he owned any tools (doubtful) they certainly never were going to get worn out.

After repeated (and unsuccessful) requests to take a look at the single Narco ADF in several 402's and Islanders, he pinned a notice to the board in the crew room stating "......all ADF's will be fixed before the onset of the wet season...." to which a certain pilot added the words "...a memo listing all rainy days for the next 12 months will be issued shortly.." :)

Introduced the fleet to gorilla snot to seal leaky crankcases.
He wouldnt work in an iron lung, I believe he got railroaded out of Darwin by Ossey Osgood and he wasnt all that fussy....:hmm:

A question for some of you old PNG hands.

The weather conditions shown in skywagondriver's photo captioned "Yalumet 1972".

Would that have precluded a departure?
Was it likely to burn off?
Would you have climbed out above the cloud layer?

Just curious thats all. :confused:
