Shopping Frenzy
I've often wanted to buy some stuff....but I'm waiting for them to bring out some stuff with the shooting star livery on it. A 727, 737-200/300, and 762 model would be fantastic...whoops forgot the skystar..it's all a distant memory now
And then there are all the other things I'd buy...$$$ permitting of course hahaha

I could've helped you guys in remission, but then I had a very moving ceremony in late '89 - A Cremation actually.
Up went 2 complete uniforms, manuals on F27,F50,DC9,B727 and "the deathstar" as well as some very nice models of the above. All sent off with a couple of fine bottles of red at the BBQ and a few good mates.
As you keep telling we who went before you GET OVER IT

SSA - It was referred to as the "deathstar" in the early days of it's introduction 1988 by AN because of a number of incidents:
Notably the crash in France into the pine trees - where it also picked up the tab of "40 mill $ Chainsaw" and also an incident in Warsaw I think by Lufhansa where after touch down on an icy runway the aircraft applied GA Thrust and speared out the end of the runway, along with a lot of other logic problems which used to occur with the computers in the early days.

That's what I suspected
That's what I suspected...couldn't be sure though.
By the way, who came up with the name of "Skystar" for the A320 anyway? And why were names not given to the rest of the types ? (excluding the spaceship of course)

Not forgetting Indian Airlines union pilots refusing to crew the 320 after one dived into the ground on finals. They already had the wind up over an occurance where a sizable bird hit the windsreen and believe it or not the no 2 engine rolled back and the FOs EFIS fell over.
For SixStar Ansett, It was some Ables inspired thing. When they first went on line here there was great hype linking the things to the great days of travel, the most particular being the Orient Express. Lots of timber veneer dividers, styilised menu cards etc.
Gaudy, gross, crass but nothing you or I couldn't come up with in the last stages of syphiliis dementia.

I think also Spotlight that it was to try and remove all the bad press from a badly launched product.
As mentioned above an A320 that that prunes pine trees, dives into a golf course on short finals, and over-runs runways is not a good track record when you are a launch customer.
So Sir Peter, the ex truck driver from Hungary called upon the staff to come up with a brand name for the type.
Skystar it was called, Deathstar it was refered to.
Spaceship? Well l will leave that one for the keeper
PS: Don't forget it was AN who got Airbus to change the set up of the control stick inputs after the "famous" go-around at Sydney. Well, so l am told.

I remember fondly the introduction of the A320 . We used to refer to it as the A160 --- it turned out to be only half the aircraft that Airbus told Abeles it would be. Word was that he got them that cheap that their book value was much more than what he paid for them . Turned out to be a pretty good and serviceable aircraft though.

You are inferring that Airbus changed side stick logic?
They are still alegebraically summed.
I imagine they changed the take over procedure ie: on take over the red button on the side stick is pushed to assume control on GA.
The problem in this incident was the Capt took over but the F/O maintained some side stick input.

Point of order halas. Ansett was the launch customer for the -200, not the A320 itself.
It also helps when your corrupt boss is best mates with a corrupt PM. Especially when you realise that the aircraft, purchased on a whim at the Paris airshow, was supposed to replace the B727-277LR for the SYD-PER route and had to have the "rules" changed to allow it to operate that very same route!
You know, I really don't miss that awfull buzzing noise the A320 made!

The big difference between those of us who lost our jobs with Ansett in 2003 and "those that went before us" is that our jobs were taken away from us and yours were signed away with your signature at the bottom of a letter of resignation.

Talk about thread Hijacking, thought this was about AN Merchandise.
Chocks Away - that flarose site doesn't seem to exist?
permFO - WE all lost our jobs, only those of us that left in '89 worked for an Airline (that's prior to it getting raped by The Fat Man) You lot that arrived in our wake were only there for the money and took it down the gurgler 12 yrs later.
AN - RIP.

Loose Connection - Its not surprising that any reference to Ansett will get hijacked from the original topic. At least we agree on a couple of issues. One is that you left your job in '89 and the other is that Abeles played a large part in Ansetts demise.
Where we diverge however is that those who joined Ansett later were the reason for Ansett going under and that we only joined for the money. The money was certainly very nice after the pay rates in GA but the big attraction was the opportunity to fly jets, a big motivator for 99.9% of all airline pilots.

Amos , just a question to clarify something. Who do you regard as scabs. Are they the ones that went back, applied when the newspaper adds went in or what. Do you include say for example a young bloke who got a call up from GA in the late 90's.
