Instructor Rating, now WHAT????

Hi guys!

Completed my instructor rating in December last year but have had NO luck in finding students!

My flying school has allowed me to operate under their AOC, which would be beneficial if I could find some students.

I have been handing out business cards left, right and centre hoping for that first break. Most of the people that receive my cards are interested but never seem to follow up.

The lack of advertising is also making it hard to promote.

CAR 210 Restriction of Advertising of Commercial Operations.

A person shall not give any public notice, by newspaper advertisement, broadcast statement or by any other means of public announcement, to the effect that a person is willing to undertake by use of an Australian aircraft ANY commercial operations unless the last mentioned person has obtained an AOC authorising the conduct of those operations.
I am after some helpful tips from instructors who have been in the same position once before.

Most schools won’t even employ a basic grade 3! So how does one start that climb from basic grade 3 to grade 2?

Any help or information would be fantastic.

Hi,
If you are a low time pilot with an instructor rating, maybe an option is going bush and getting some charter experience. I am sure you would quickly find that you would be a better instructor with some actual experience. You could then pass this on to your students if you still wanted to be an instructor later down the track. I hope people dont get there instructor rating just so they can get hours. This could be why the standard of pilots being taught is dropping because some of the instructors are not there for the right reason. How can you teach somebody to walk if you can only crawl !!

Now what ??

Now what ? - Get your your instructor rating then never use it, like myself and many others.

It is not the end of the world. I eventually found myself flying charter many years later.

When I gained my Grade 3, I had no job, and a family of 5 to look after. Less than 3 week s later I had 27 students, and I was flying 10-12 hours per week. It got to a point where I was actually turning students away. There are many ways to get students.
Also, when you think about it, with a majority of fresh pilots heading north, it would probably leave a bit of a hole in the instructor population. Aside from what others may post, instructing is great fun, and a great learning experience, but inevitably, to move on in the industry, charter is the way to go.

If yo want some pointers on how to get some students, just send a carton of Crownies to me, a bottle of Baileys (for the wife), and contact me on [email protected]

I can relate to what you are going through right now.
I to am an instructor and I am at the stage of telling some one to shove this instructing up there arse!

I am TRYING to get some cross country hours to upgrade but after a year I am sick of it

Your point about CAR 210 is valid but remember thatr you are under an aoc from your school , as long as you quote the AOC number in any adverts you do you are OK
What I would warn you about is some of these other self centred back stabbing senior instructors that would **** on you as soon as look at you. Watch them carefully and don't take any **** from them
Having had my bitch I feel better now
It is a good job regardless of that what you have to do is work on being the best you can be with the few student that you have. That way you will get you students to do the advertising for you it is a rule they use in marketting : 80 20 rule , 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers
good luck with it, if you in it for the flying you will like it , I did
