Hi all, just wondering what some of you get up to in your spare time, to keep you sane and give you more to talk about than flying.
Personally, and for several colleagues its' Kite Surfing. Bloody awesome, I'd recommend it to anyone!! Except the sharks up North make you a bit weary.

My many hobbies include : Beer, wine, bourbon, vodka,etc.
The best thing about this hobby is that they can be mixed, and / or enjoyed at once.
Seriously though, anyone ever noticed how many pilots put down " Bushwalking" as a hobby ?..... especially the new pilots looking for that first job!
Golf, cricket squash and boating are also good hobbies.

Hmmmm, spare time pursuits when not flying on the cattle station..... Now let me see.....
Apart from the blantantly obvious ones such as drinking etc, I've been far too busy in the past six months in my spare time........ Hazard reduction on the airstrip (roo's), fencing, bore-runs, mustering, roping, drafting, tail-tagging, turning micky bulls into bullocks, branding, driving cattle road trains, scrubbing troughs, fixing bores and windmills that wont run, rebuilding engines for the station vehicles, shooting feral cats - wild dogs - camels etc, barman, accomodation booking clerk, bowser attendant, cleaner, cook, forklift driver, laundry helper, fighting bushfires, dozer driver, grader driver, backhoe operator, drilling rig offsider, post hole digger, wire strainer, riding wild emus, bull catching, plumber, drainer, building new cattleyards, front-end and suspension mechanic, raking leaves, feeding birds, dragging dead kangaroos and cattle off the highway, building sheds, welding - both oxy- mig and arc, dropping doughnuts in the utes, motor bike riding, skiing on salt lakes, quad bike mechanic, signwriter, painter, bullbar fabricator, and overhauling carburettors.
Just as well I was a mechanic and working in the building industry in another life.....
Oh, and I'd like to say I've been fishing too, but the closest water was some 600nm distant......
For those of you who didn't/don't wanna move away from the capital cities etc to further your flying....... You dunno what you're missing!

I too was bitten by the kitesurf bug about 18 months ago, and try to surf every day off (if the wind gods smile).
Have nine days off on my roster for January and was considering slipping down to Perth for a kiting week. Could you send me up some advice on top spots, kite size to bring etc?

Hi all,
would you believe.............
I fly airplanes.............radio controlled ones, usually about 5 or 6 foot wingspan.
I find it really relaxing, initially to build 'em, then to set them up and fly 'em, together with all the fellow club flyers, it's great!
Some guys build and fly scale aircraft, others just want to do aeros with an airframe (with lots of power!).
Been doing it for many years, nitro methane hasentt, er hassented,...er.. , not effected me yet!

Don't mind a spot of rock climbing, trail bike riding, listening to/playing music, and surfing which take up most of my hobby time.
I’ve recently tried to switch over to riding a short board but am generally spending more time under the waves rather than riding them.

Drinking and reading quality pornagraphic material, the only problem is the cute girls make you drink more, as your stuck in the middle of some god forsaken aboriginal community and they just stare out from the pages as if to say " come back to the city big boy, your needed back home".
So you go for a drive out to the waterfalls and have a swim around ( with a cold beer of course) hoping that some stray backpackers have decided to go on a naughty bikini clad adventure,but its the WET season and there is not one, NOT ONE!.
You would think you could get to Darwin for Maintainence to bask in the lights of the nightclubs and watch the bronzed swedish ladies tongue kiss each other after they have drunk to much illusion shakers, BUT your plane is doing 5hrs a week and it will take 3 years to tick over 100hrs, and when the time finally comes the company decides just to give you another aircraft and let some other guy who has just spent the last 2 weeks shagging in Sydney fly it up for you.

I would have to say Art is my interest. I work with paints,pastels and pencil/ink mainly landscape and still-life but this year I will be putting in an effort to paint and draw the 'figure' (I'll send up some nudes for you Lake Evil).
Lately my time has been spent at the local swimming pool keeping fit and checking out the 'yummy mummies'

Rollerblading is also a favourite,Centennial Park in Sydney produces some quality eye candy (especially weekends).
All of the above only when I'm not on the Prune.

Each to their own, mine I don't mention as the AH's at the top would freak.
As a "red neck" and approaching 37 yrs in the industry I still race motorbikes - seriously, no "pussy stuff" 500's.
Why? It breaks the boredom of regimentation and discipline for the freedom of precision and precise decision making akin to our occupation without a bloody check ride every 6 mths.
The occassional "step-off" brings you back to reallity and it's great hobbling into ops on Mon morn with grin on face mentioning that you tripped off the kerb to the boring "farts" with no life!!!

What ever happened to those former past time pursuits for the discerning aviator (aviatrix) such as nude darts, custard wrestling, producing gutteral vowel sounds , sticking chewing gum on nuns or bobbing for apples in hotel toilets on the odd overnight?
And what's all this health and fitness nonsense we read about?
Did an overnight with a few pilots that insisted on this novel concept commonly referred to as a "run" followed by drinking milk at the bar no less!
Hang the blighters and flog their scrawny hides I say!!
The dying skills of wenching,blasting an ale or twelve and excelling in masterly inactivity I am proud to say is however still alive and well.
