Mt Beauty Accident
From memory, this is the second time there's been a fatal plane crash when scattering a deceased friend's ashes. So very sad.

Smoke haze in area
Rumour has it (in the spirit of PPRUNE) that it was as a result of poor visibility on approach.
There had been much autumn burning off in the area with smoke haze.
Possible case of slant visibility problem.
A Grob 109 is a motor glider.
Not sure why a go around and divert/ precautionary landing elsewhere was not done.
Hopefully for those lost, a cause can be determined and lessons learned.
it won’t bring them back, I know.

Airport Information
It is a beautiful location. Good people there. I have flown gliders out from this site (winch launched). Spectacular scenery.
A safe location if you know what you are doing. I was very well briefed about the site by the local operator before flying from there.
Excellent website about YMBT here: Mount Beauty Airport YMBT ? Gateway to the High Plains, Victoria

I’m not sure that I personally find kangaroo and bird hazards plus down drafts, no takeoff on 14 due to uphill slope and a mountain on upwind to be “safe”, however each to their own!
I had to do a go around there in a fairly high performing aircraft on 14 with 1 POB and I’ll tell you with the rising terrain underneath, it wasn’t a pleasant feeling!

Smoke has been a serious issue around Bright and Porepunkah as well. At times it has been difficult to fly paragliders off Mystic. So there may not have been any easy place to divert to.
"Two-Seater Motor Glider Accident, Mount Beauty, Victoria, Australia, Sat 27 April 2024" would have been a better heading.
Grob G109B motor glider accident. Very experienced pilot, extensive gliding and touring motor glider background. Qualified instructor. In Australia, gliders and motor gliders are on CASA National Aircraft Register, and operated and maintained to approved standards. Gliding Australia is Part 149 Approved Self-Administering Aviation Organisation. Glider pilot training is provided against approved syllabi by Gliding Australia instructors. Flying a TMG requires specific training syllabus and qualifications endorsed.
Investigation is continuing, Gliding Australia supporting police and coroner.
Male pilot and female passenger killed. Flight was to scatter ashes of passenger's father, pilot's close friend, over Mount Beauty airport in Victorian high country.
Accidents like this hit the gliding and regional aviation community hard. Our first thoughts are with the family, friends, gliding club members and aviation colleagues, affected communities. Most tragic circumstances, so be considerate of the wellbeing of people who might read this stuff.
Yes, we want to better understand causes and risk factors. Keep an eye on the Gliding Australia FB page and website.

Had you visited YMBT before your visit that day?
Many airports around Oz have bird and kangaroo hazards. Our roads have kangaroo hazards.
It the high country in America and Europe, and New Guinea, one way runways without any go around option are plenty (example Chourchevel Altiport, LFLJ).
It is not like it is a big secret about take-offs on RWY 14, go arounds, yes would be more interesting. Did you consider your go around options prior to arrival?
Nevertheless, in a go around situation, you are already at safe flying speed near the ground (I hope) with power and ability to climb, not accelerating and climbing from runway level.
I guess it depends how late on your final approach you decided to go around.
The strip there is wide. It is paved with grass each side (yes it can get boggy in the wet, but then consider why you need to be going to YMBT).
I would have a low threshold for breaking off approach early onto RWY 14 at YMBT if things weren't right.
What happened (why did you have to go around) to have put yourself (and any Pax) in that unpleasant situation if you had read the ERSA and the briefing notes for pilots?

I had indeed been to YMBT before and the winds dictated the use of runway 14.
