Light Aircraft Crash at Caiguna WA.

Perth Radio 6PR reporting at midday that a light aircraft has crashed 'in flames' at Caiguna, WA.... at around 0930 this morning (WST ?)

Nil other details given. Caiguna is a popular refuelling and refreshment stop for 'East - West' flights, approx 190nm E of Norseman / 225nm ESE of Kal.

Best 'Bacon Sannies' E of Perth.......and a cold drink.

It seems we'll have to wait on this one - at least until emergency services actually get there. That's the one big problem with the Nullabour.. it's big!!

This evening's news says it was a 'Jabiru' / single occupant.

Nil other details as yet, other than, being an 'ultralight' / 'recreational' aircraft, the ATSB may not investigate.

A sad event anyway, especially just before Christmas, for the pilot and the family....

News.com is reporting the following:

The body of a man has been found after a light plane crashed in remote country near the Western Australian and South Australian border.
Emergency services raced to the scene of the crash after the Cessna plane went down about 9.40am on Friday near Caiguna, a small roadhouse community located along the Nullarbor Plain.
However, it was too late to save the man, who was aged in his 40s and was the sole occupant of the aircraft.
Caiguna is about 348km east of the border between WA and SA.
“Inquiries are ongoing and police will prepare a report for the Coroner,” WA Police said.

BUT the report is accompanied by a photo of an aircraft that is not a Cessna and the location is not Caiguna so maybe the text is not too reliable either!!!

The reporter obviously failed geography too, because if Caiguna was east of the border it would be in SA not WA.

Probably an Adelaide journo, who thinks that SA deserves to be bigger. SA border now further west than our “outdated” maps depict.

Still a Cessna, according to the quality reporters at the Daily Fail.

Whatever he wa flying, it is horrible, dreadful news for his young family.

RAAus have released a statement.

“It’s incredibly sad to share with you that last Friday a 43 year-old member from WA lost his life in an accident involving an amateur built Jabiru SK, at Caiguna, WA. There was only one person onboard.

On behalf of RAAus and all our members, I send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased pilot.

Disappointingly, the ATSB has once again decided to not investigate this accident and left it up to local police, in this remote part of the country, to establish the cause of the accident. RAAus has been engaged with police and is assisting where we can although as previously communicated with members, we will not be investigating due to the myriad of reasons shared with members previously.

In our review of this accident, any learnings will be actioned immediately and communicated with members.”
