Avalon Airshow
I have a friend who keeps his 6-seat single at Washington-Dulles International

But there's not enough demand for a GA field next door, and not enough profit to pay for it..
GA Companies could be making a killing after years of pain, ferrying in and out attendees today and tomorrow

I also went Thursday but took the wife and kids today.
Today (Sunday), 1 hour and 15 minutes each way from Oakleigh (57kms) front door of home to carpark, but… we did leave early… 6am and 2:30pm and avoided all traffic.
If you’re a pilot, go on the trade days and save the weekend sessions for families would be my advice. Less flying on the trade days, but higher quality acts.
I missed the GA area on Thursday but was pleasantly surprised today as to how large it was.

Shout out to all those controllers also, one heck of a job to manage and co ordinate all the traffic, we listened to the live stream today while watching the displays, really shows the task at hand which is not easy, certainly has its heated moments, including a PAN which I heard today. Probably not great communication with that Jetstar arrival this arvo, bit more concise communication would have prevented that confusion, don’t stress I was as lost as you were in what they wanted you to do which made no sense originally.

Do they fully control them or do they just announce the “airshow time +/- X minutes” as they do at some shows?
Which aircraft declared a PAN, do you recall?
It was bloody hot today. I pity those that went there 4 years ago when it was well into the 40’s.

They just cleared them for the takeoff/display, then cleared them to land. Many displays would be talking to each other on the tower frequency while it was underway, some interesting techniques used. If the display was dragging on a bit tower would ask them how much longer. Airservices have the supplement out which gives more detail around some operational requirements within the display zone. The only restriction I heard on a display was not above FL*** as someone was holding above it. The restricted area was largely traffic free aside the holding areas while the fast jet displays got underway. Few aircraft operating at Barwon Heads and inbound RPT was about the only aircraft within the zone.
I think the PAN was a helicopter, was hoping someone had more detail on that. Wasn’t completely looped in at the time, but something was overheating and they wanted to land on Alpha right away I recall.

The Koreans did that solo yesterday. It was so fast nobody saw it coming from right to left whilst the main bunch was distracting off to the left. It was incredibly loud and looked like it was 50 ft away… am hoping someone caught it and puts it on YouTube. At a guess it would have breached every single air display guideline. It was super quick and deafening for literally a second as it flashed past. Children were crying and the adults were literally stunned.
Yep. That pass was insane.
I’d seen the Koreans during the week so had head down in phone for a bit…. Jumped a mile. It wasn’t very far away and I was on the front fence. Reckon it was just closer to the crowd than the line of gable markers at 150’
Note to schedulers. Don’t put the Roulettes after the Black Eagles. With no disrespect to the Roulettes’ skills, many people felt them a bit of a let down coming straight after the Black Eagles.
RAAF PR machine is amazing. Here kids grab a RAAF lanyard then go to each aircraft type and grab an aircraft pin to complete the set (the place for each type all conveniently outline on the lanyard). Absolutely brilliant.

Another I remember there was repeated calls over the PA for someone to move their car as it was blocking access to something, more frantic each time. Got the crowd in - someone's in trouble -
Then a Chinook appeared with what looked like an old Morris Minor slung underneath, pass in front of the crowd then "accidentally" drop the car

Having only ever seen them as gate guards and partly-complete static displays, a highlight for me was watching the Canberra start up and do it's routine. If that's what they do at Temora, I must get up there sometime - that was awesome!
Looks like the road traffic management has not learnt from previous years.
We were staying in Anglesea. Drove out of the carpark on the exit road to an left/right intersection. One arrow pointed right to Melbourne the other left to Geelong. Cop on duty would not let me turn left.
When I explained why I wanted to turn left and that I did not know where the Melbourne direction would take me, his retort was to us the Melways.
What the hell was a Melways?
He insisted that I take the road to Melbourne.
We eventually found our way yo Anglesea.

When I were a lad….
But tell the young folk these days and they won’t believe you!
An unexpected low pass from a fast and loud fighter
RAAF have a party trick at the dusk Mindil Beach airshow at the completion of the Pitch Black exercise, everyone sitting on the sand dunes watching the fly past in front over the water when a fast jet arrives from behind at 250', over the crowd, pulls to the vertical, all that can be seen is the glowing orb of the afterburner in the twilight gloom. Magic.
The Korean pass was a little different since it wasn't even the finale - just part of their airshow sequence. Definitely a WTF moment!!! I, along with at least half the crowd, ducked and I have absolutely no idea where he went. I reckon a few in the crowd might've needed to check their trousers after that one.
A long time ago I watched an airshow at RAAF Laverton from the top of a tower the firies used to dry their hoses (not a euphemism…) near the runway. I looked down at the FIII’s (very) low pass.
