Avalon Airshow
Surprised (or maybe not) to read that the Avalon airshow won’t be operating Avalon East for next years show. So the only option to “fly in” is via Lethbridge and get a shuttle bus - a 45min drive WITHOUT traffic (can easily double that at peak airshow and hour times).

Ah that’s crap and super disappointing. Thanks so much for posting this update. Hopefully we can get in and out of Avalon main smoothly on the trade days.

Extremely disappointing. An airshow that you can't fly in to.....
Due to the rapid development of the industrial precinct at Avalon Airport together with other regulatory and traffic concerns Traffic concerns? This change will only INCREASE the number of ground vehicles going to/from the airshow. Did the Airshow have to pay Air Services to run a tower? or did ASA donate their resources to encourage the sector? (Who pays?) |

An Airshow catered to the military with the inconvenience of having to have public days!
Last time I went there I flew in, really don’t think I’d visit it any other way. Might be time to sit on a rock at the You Yangs to watch the limited aerial displays 🤣! |

Save your energy and head to the Pacific Airshow on the Gold Coast in August instead. If it's even the smallest part as good as the one in California last week, you guys are in for a treat

I guess it’s a numbers game. Maybe 500-1,000 fly in to Avalon East and more than 200,000 visitors attend by motor vehicles and buses.
Would be nice if they make Avalon main a little more flexible. |
The problem they have is traffic at Avalon main is close to at saturation point. After accommodating heavy display aircraft movements, display time and Jetstar there is not much capacity left.
Also heard the flight line has been pushed further away from the spectators (CASA?). There will be no spectators in front of the grandstands. Another area south of tower road is likely, past the fire station. Not sure how that will go with the amateur photographers. |

The bloke I know who usually helps with Tower every air show took the retirement package during the shutdown, like many others. They won’t have the means to spare multiple tower controllers to run it. Certainly is other parts of the business they need the manpower in at the moment.
Not only that they take a saving on the P&L by not having to run it. Probably the most important bit. |

more runways than Avalon. Which equates to 116 per hour. Let’s say 4 runways max (which is not actually realistic as there is a main one), divided by 4 is 800 aircraft per runway. Avalon East last time on the Saturday would have had a maximum of 100 aircraft parked and I’m pretty sure there aren’t 700 on display at Avalon main. There is no comparison. |

Avalon East has over 250 aircraft on the Saturday, plus charters coming and going..
it’s an academic discussion as there is no more Avalon East and Its tha Oz regulation environment here. |
