Pinky ... all Scottish distilleries were still intact while I was there. Suspect that I made a slight indentation on the supply of gin and tonic tho!
Veg ... dunno mate, I've only been back at work for one day so far and haven't fully caught up on things yet.
Just for the Record
I've deleted the album of Chuck's photos from my FotoTime site. If anyone tries to access the URL that I posted at the outset of this thread, it won't work.

Grandpa Aerotart
My new favorite twin prop aeroplane.
Well I just got back from a day and a half in Mount Gambier where I had the extreme pleasure of meeting and flying with Leigh OConner of OConner Airlines.
God does this industry need more like him!
Anyway did an endorsement on C441 VH-YFD and today flew it back to Archerfield for an operator at Cooly.
I can only echo every positive comment ever written about the mighty Cessna Conquest...what a great machine...we suffered a depressurisation enroute (nothing spectacular...just the outflow valve opened without prior permission) and flew the last 45 minutes to AF at 10000' but we believe it was only water vapour in the lines that froze after 2+30 at FL290...no pax so slipped on the oxy mask and a gentle descent to thicker air...arrived AF 5 minutes later than planned...no sweat. Handed her over to the engineers and she'll be right as rain, no pun intended, for my next flight in her on Monday.
Thanks to the ATC people for their usual great performance!
For those wondering what I'm up to...just a bit of a hiatus for the time being...when the fat lady sings I'll perhaps let you know a little more...perhaps not...but for the time being I'm thoroughly enjoying getting to know a terrific little aeroplane and brushing the cobwebs off the SP IFR skills I haven't used much in 7 years.
A few more piccies for yuz
Chuck.
PS Pinky...two are yours I believe and the one of the Talair Otter was taken by Frank Halbauer when he came for a ride one morning.

Good to know yer happy and well Chuck, but I'd been looking forward to having an ale with you in Singas one of these days. But, seeing as yer in WA, we'll be able to do that at the next Ozbash, won't we!
And now for something a little different ... well, sorta! Just got a few more photos from Pinky and have posted them to his gallery on my FotoTime site. To save you all the trouble of flicking back to page 1 for the URL, just click here.

WA?
Do they have a Gold Coast in WA?
And who says I won't be back in Singas sooner rather than later?
Chuck.
PS That picture of Lonny and Tim about says it all for Douglas in the last days doesn't it?
And that little office girl looks like a goer!!!

Kumul ??
All this talk of Kumul I and II brings back a few memories, not all good - remember the Moresby Gliding Club ?
I seem to remember that the first Government ministerial aircraft was in fact a Cessna 421 Golden Eagle - can't remember if the callsign was Kumul tho.

Two Dogs I think you are right about the 421.
It may have even been flown by Brian McCook bit hazy on that tho.
Can you imagine the Moresby glider club thingy happening in good ole Oz?
A mate flew the GII for a short while in '83, he's now Dragon.

Would someone care to enlighten me on the Moresby Gliding Club; ie the incident(s) concerned or would that be inviting a visit from a legal type?
Send me a private message then if that's the case. I'm definitely intrigued by this one!!!
Ozmate; thanks for putting up my piccies. Unfortunately I don't have any more on disc to send but that may change in due course. Got a nice sequence of about seven taken going down the Kosipe valley to Tapini if they would be of any interest.

Pinky this may help....
The author of this little ditty probably prefers to remain anonymous. The poem will be best appreciated by the current and ex-PNG pilots.
A little background for those not "in the know":
The Civil Aviation Department (regulatory body) operated a Kingair and on one occasion it ran out of fuel and glided into Port Moresby.
The Port Moresby Gliding Club
A group of young enthusiasts
Met at a local pub
To talk about a common love
The Port Moresby Gliding Club.
Their membership was very low
The running costs were high,
They needed some dramatic act
To catch the public's eye.
"I've got a good idea" said one
"Been planning it all day,
I'll try it out tomorrow
When coming back from Lae."
The flight to Lae was wonderful
The aircraft right on track,
They had no reason to suspect
The drama coming back.
Their business done, they climbed aboard
One had a bulging bilum
The Captain chuckled to himself,
"The last ten miles will thrill 'em".
This trick will have no impact
If I fill her up with fuel,
I'll take enough for top of climb
And glide in from Mount Yule.
They flew along as smooth as silk
With not a single jolt,
But as they got to Galley Reach
Both donks groaned to a halt.
The Captain said "Thank Christ they've stopped
They make a dreadful din,
I'll now complete this exercise
And glide the bastard in."
A glider is a lovely thing
You see them everywhere,
Some metal, others wood and glue
But never a KingAir!
With noses flat against the glass
The victims watched in horror,
And none of them had any doubt
They'd all be dead tomorra.
He held her on the centre line
He called the tower and said,
"For f**ks sake make me number one
I'm landing straight ahead."
He put it down right on the keys
and made sure he was clear,
Then smilingly he turned and said,
"I think we need a beer."
The Aero Club looks very nice
Looks like its just been painted,
But there was no-one to answer him
The bloody lot had fainted!
Wes turned and looked him in the eye
He said "Thank Christ that's ended!
It really won't surprise me
If your licence is suspended!
Those passengers we've got on board
Look like they're in a trance,
But now you must excuse me
'Cos I think I've shat my pants!"
When Joe Wal heard it on the 'phone
His hands flew to his head,
His eyes stood out like organ stops
"F**k me" was all he said.
But when heard the details
Of this history making flight,
His eyes lit up with interest
And he thought of it all night.
For Joe has always longed to fly
Although it made him dizzy,
But this bloke here could show him how
On days he wasn't busy.
So Joe signed up on the spot
They headed for the pub,
Now Joe's the latest member
Of the Moresby Gliding Club.
Sir Julius picked up his 'phone and heard
A voice known far and wide,
"This Grumman that arrives next month
- I wonder how that glides?"
(A bilum is a PNG-made string bag.)
(Joe Wal was the head of the Department.)
(Sir Julius was the Prime Minister at the time.)

Capt Veg; Thanks for the poem post. Think I have heard the name of the glider pilot myself. Alan Yarnold, my Chief Pilot when I was with DZ used to sing a rather hilarious song about flying a Nomad and the incident concerned was part of a verse.
'Boss' where are you now??
Ozmate; OK; I'll get 'em scanned and send them in due course.
Woomera; The new forum titles are excellent. No-one should have any grumbles now! Hopefully...

A few of Everest and K2....I'm reasonably sure anyway...they are harder to pick than you might think...and clear days are rare...I think these were taken on about my 4th trip to Kathmandu and the first where it was, relatively, 'severe clear'...I never saw fark all on most of the previous trips.
To give some sense of scale the track outbound from Kathmandu doesn't take you that close...perhaps 60 or 80 nm at a guess...and it's roughly 15 to 20 minutes after departure KTM, @ 4500' amsl, when you pass by so probably climbing through about 29000'...or just clearing the MSA and only a smiggen above the tops.
When I can I'll scan a copy of the 02 VOR/DME plate...it's an eye opener, especially the missed approach
Chuck.

Hey Chuck, they sure ARE big muthas of photos mate. Musta taken forever to upload them to your site! That's a really interesting missed approach - I don't feel quite so bad about what I had to do with that 27 VOR/DME at NZ! Still, riding that one to the MDA wouldn't be anywhere near the same as the KTM version!
I'm looking forward to more photos from ya mate... but maybe adjust yer scan settings a tad next time?

So what's the mystery strip in Plugga's album?
Grandpa Aerotart
Boang...On an Island just North of Nissan Island (called Green Island in WW2 when occupied by RNZAF Corsairs) and south of Malekolon, which is south of Londolovit which is on Lihir Island...which when they finish extracting gold will be a hole in the ocean surrounded by a slag heap
