AOPA Australia becoming very active

I have just listened to the following interview with Ben Morgan on ABC radio in the Deputy Prime Minister’s seat. Note if you are using your phone, choose the 'listen in browser' option.


Wow, has AOPA changed! I recommend to everyone to get involved and become a member of AOPA – even if just giving support for one year if that is all they can afford. With Marc De Stoop and Ben Morgan, I believe they are really going to come up with results.

Can anyone remember in the past decade an AOPA interview on ABC radio that was so passionate about general aviation and flight training in this country?

Noble intentions but way too late. Because of CASA, Airservices and privatised airports, GA is in terminal decline.

Good and passionate people like Ben, Dick, Marc don't actually need to do this however they believe in our industry and our children who want to persue aviation in all its facets.

Ben is not only passionate, he is also highly intelligent. We need to support him and initiatives of AOPA as a whole that already has produced results.

Those who are only capable of juvenile snide remarks from the sidelines need to either wake up to themselves or do GA a favour and don't come back.

I have to agree with Ovation to a point. The privatisation of airports is long overdue for an inquiry into how multinational companies have been allowed to bleed this industry dry.

PS: QantasLink and other regionals are cancelling services left, right and centre, due pilot shortages. Elsewhere on PPRuNe, Air North is reported to have backed their Metros against the fence due pilot shortages. Try finding a young LAME with GA experience these days!!

Ovation..its never too late. Yes GA is in serious decline...BUT good people are getting stuck in there to turn all that around.
Wont be easy ...CAsA is a bastard bureaucracy, a tower of power and spin and BS to maintain their status quo, as masters of the trough.
The 'Iron Ring' is completely rusted in and will be difficult to remove...but it can be done. It must be done.

The CAsA Soviet must be pulled apart, dragged back into a Department with an Aviation Minister who will have the power to direct CAsA...and not be mesmerised by the spin and BS that CAsA shovel up to protect themselves, and justify their existence.

Our problem now..and always has been that CAsA has "safetied", ad nauseam, aviation into an imminent CFIT

Dick, Marc, Ben and other toilers are fair dinkum in preventing that final fatal impact.

Think positive, join AOPA and get behind the push to save GA with FARs , modernizing the Act, stop making us all criminals, and get CAsA out of the "Investigation" business while they're at it.

Regulator (sic...very sick), corrupt judge, biased jury and executioner has got to be terminated in the above process.

Is there a brave new av world in the offing.?.I like to think so.

Obviously TBMLegend is not up to speed with comments in another thread (Flight review for the night rating) from an aviator of the stature no less than Dick Smith, but quick to criticise and insult others. Must have been a schoolyard bully in earlier times. I spent some time at Parafield in the last couple of days talking to Service organisations and others, and the common thread is it's really quiet. My Avionics guy chased down a small fault for me and said it took 4 hours but I would not be charged for - he said he had nothing else or better to do. Another LAME on the field had no work, no staff left and is catching up with paperwork.

As I said in my earlier post, it's a noble cause by AOPA, but time to push back was 20 years ago. Now you'd be taking on entrenched government organisations with unlimited resources, time and money, and quite frankly, you'd be pissing in the wind. The only way to get the message across (now) would be CFMEU sytyle militant action. Imagine if somebody blockaded Sydney Airport for a couple of days and seriously disrupted passenger movement - then and only then would you get the attention of politicians and bureaucrats.

Dick Smith wrote; (emphasis by Ovation)

whilst CASA fights tooth and nail to make sure the Act is not changed to consider both cost and safety, I believe the industry is doomed. I can’t yet see a stop to the one-way ratchet of increasing costs.

You may not know but their budget has gone from $90 million to $180 million in 16 years. Presumably this means more and more people writing more and more expensive regulations.

You have to understand that it is sort of a religious mantra “Safety is the most important consideration – clearly after cost – especially when GA is concerned.” So even though I will keep working on trying to get the Act changed and some sensible decisions made, my advice is in the meantime is to suggest that people desist from any commercial involvement with aviation unless they want to get their fingers badly burnt.

You only have to walk around Bankstown airport to see the number of businesses closed – many of them where the owners have lost everything..

AOPA Membership.

1. Is AOPA Membership just annually from when you join, or does it follow the financial year?

2. If I tick the box stating, Do not automatically renew, Do they still automatically deduct my credit card each year. (I certainly expect they would not, but just checking in advance).

The membership starts from the date you join. If you don’t Tick the auto renew it won’t.

Thanks for the comment. I've known Dick personally for most of his aviation career. He is passionate about aviation and right now is a leader in trying to turn the ship around before it goes around!

Ive just joined.

I fully support the drive by AOPA and Dick Smith to try and save GA (and LSA) flying in Australia.
Its ridiculous that small GA Airlines, Flight training and Private GA flying is being forced out of existence by severe costs, at the same time they are bringing in Pilots on 457 Visas to fly turboprops and jets in this country.

They would normally be recruited form Third Level GA Airlines and Charter organistions, and those pilots replaced by new CPLs / Instructors.

Also, Save Our right to fly Light Singles without the excessive costs, regulatory burden, and over the top medical restrictions.

I pretty much share the same sentiments but even so, I just rejoined AOPA Hopefully that is "getting off my butt" a bit - so to speak.

Listened to the interview - wow, compared to the 80's when I was a member, things have changed. Well done Ben. I've rejoined. It won't be a quick fix, and in some ways too late, but if we don't at least try now then we can't complain later. AOPA was a part of the problem in the past, but not now.
