C210 or Airvan or Both?
Hi All
Any advice would be much appreciated. CPL holder with 370 hours TT. Figuring out next move. Have never flown for a living (as I'm in construction) but am going to pursue a career in aviation. I Have C152, C172, PA28/161, PA28/181 and P68C ratings. Current in none, which will be remedied in the not too distant future. Once current, will do a Night Rating. After that, what A/C would be better to gain experience and hours in to get into charter flying either in Perth or Down South/ Up North? An Airvan or C210 or both?

I expect even if the numbers were reversed (as per cloudee) the retractable gear is something you currently don't have, so would be beneficial.
I don't see a benefit in GA8 unless you are targeting a specific employer.

A 210 is going to be cheaper to hire than an Airvan (though not cheap!).
If you can fly the 210 or 206 you can fly an Airvan, yes GA8's are a really bitch to start when hot, but a little coaching and you'll become an expert in the IO540 shuffle

I am going with 210 as well. Sadly with your hours it will be a matter of being in the right place at the right time though. I think your best qualification is the construction industry work. Although you don’t say what it was doing, I got some of my first flying work by being a builder/handyman and it seems there are a lot of ex builder pilots.

William Creek would be a good place to score a gig these days. Not the isolated outpost it used to be... got a bitumen runway and mobile phone reception these days

Thanks everyone for the info. Much appreciated. Yeah road construction is pretty lucrative, but only one shot at life so might as well give flying (for a living) a decent crack. C210 it is!
Those in the know would take a 210 over an Airvan any day. Your back & bum will thank you!
Your nose wont. I'd take the smell of a crisp shiny new Airvan over the dusty old Datsun-esque pong of a C210 cockpit any day.

another vote for C210.
If you are competent in the 210 ( late model, just not the early short wing with struts ) you can handle the Airvan (and the 206). The converse is not always the case.

Global Aviator, you better not be trash talking the C209 here, I personally have about 1000hrs flying them and whilst they're a bit of a dog to balance properly once you get them airborne they're amazing, passengers love sitting down the back of them as you get so little noise from the engine because of the distance from it!
Can be a little tricky to get used to having that much fuselage behind you as well when taxiing. Did you hear about the new Glass Cockpit Versions coming out?

Yes the glass is amazing, I thought the G1000 was fantastic but what they have retrofitted is truly amazing, who would have thought HUD in a bug basher? But then again with the NEO engine upgrade!!!!

You want uncomfortable aircraft seats?? Top of the list would be the PIC seat of a "Bongo Van!" (AKA a 'brumm brumm' in PNG back in taim bilong then.)
