When is the star assigned for airline flights
Hi all
I have been listening to brisbane airport control frequencies quite a bit lately and i hear aircraft stepping down via the star to join the ils and just curious at what point do the pilots know what star they will use, i have not heard brisbane approach mention the star by name just descend via star for approach
Is this something that centre approves before handing the flight to approach or is this known at flight plan stage, or pehaps relayed via company or atc mid flight, thanks in advance

Dispatcher will file a certain Arrival based on forecast weather.
Center controller will generally assign before you reach the ‘Approach’ frequency.
Well that’s how it works in civilized parts of the world anyway.

Yea, NZ is a pain like that.
You don't contact Control until you reach the Oceanic/Domestic boundary, which is also the STAR Transition waypoint. As such, you receive a STAR clearance after you've started flying it.
Auckland also love to re-clear you for the RNP arrival late into your descent rather than at the boundary.

Jetman, you'll probably need to an earlier frequency along their flight path, you'll often hear the phrase "Expect blah blah blah STAR", I expect for some it probably comes along with their CPDLC info as well so you won't be able to see that.
