Yea, NZ is a pain like that.
You don't contact Control until you reach the Oceanic/Domestic boundary, which is also the STAR Transition waypoint. As such, you receive a STAR clearance after you've started flying it.
Auckland also love to re-clear you for the RNP arrival late into your descent rather than at the boundary.
