Instructor rating

My partner is looking to do her instrutor rating. in doing research for a suitable school in the Sydney region ,we still havnt picked one yet as we have found the desired standard isnt what we hoped. (even found schools teaching aero ratings with instructors that arnt rated)not only this, we have found a few different quotes for time required, and hence, varying prices...
so we hit the CAR's.. and have had no luck finding anywhere in black and white explaining the hours in the aircraft needed.. not only that, the draft regs apparently due to be made law in december are hinting at the removal of the current grade 1,2 and 3 levels. and being replaced with the one Instrutor rating, and addition of endorsements enabling you to instruct that endorsement..
Does anyone have a better understanding of the Instrutor rating requirements? hours wise? and what is happening with the new regs? would it be better to just wait until December to see what CASA throws at us?

we would like it done ASAP, full time on weekends. as in, booking an aircraft and instrutor both days until its complete. we are current advanced aeros rated, CPL, CSU, NVFR IFR and retract, so assuming under the new possible regs, a newly minted instructor can teach these endos?.

Ultralights,

Firstly, its been a few years since I did my initial (2008), but I did my instructors rating at Curtis Aviation and can highly recommend them.

Secondly, with regards to hours, you require a min of 50 hours of flying on flight instructors course, of which a maximum of 20 hours can be mutual with another FIC student. There was a large amount of theory and briefing involved as well. When I did mine, I did the course solo, so completed all 50 hours as dual with the instructor, no mutual.

Thirdly, with the new Part 61 and other regs coming in December, depending on who you speak to, depends on the response. Even different people in CASA have a different opinion on the interpretation of the rules and how they will be implemented

Stretch.

Two year transition period to the new Part 61 so I guess there won't be a rush to offer a new-fangled rating.

Ultralights, a read of the new reg (not a draft any more) should give you enough of an understanding to decide whether to go now or wait for the possible option of a shorter course with a limited rating. (The grades are still there too.)

I suggest you read the CAAP on instructor rating to see how the quotes compare with CASA's view.

"...... advanced aeros rated"? No such thing that I am aware of now but stuff like that in the new Part 61.
Aeros training by some-one not an instructor permitted under the current rules.

By advanced aeros, I mean enough manoeuvers to compete in AAC intermediate and advanced sequences. (Which my partner won in her second comp) Training for NFVR, aeros and CPL were with Red Baron. Curtis we wernt to impressed with, Airborne at YSCN appeared ok, and used more modern aircraft. Some at Ysbk are just scary! I seriously wonder if there is any decent quality instruction left out there, not just to pass a test, but to teach to a level approaching military quality. The instructor rating is not for hour building, but a will to teach students to be the best pilots possible. Not get students in and out the door ASAP to make room for the next wallet. So to do that, we need someone who can teach us to be the best teachers. Not just get another rating in the book.

Weekends no matter how hard you work will still take considerable time. Instructor rating approaching military standard? Only place you will get that is in the RAAF. If you and your partner are going to the QLD champs this weekend there are a few people you can talk to about this. Granted there aren't many quality providers these days, due mainly, to do it properly costs serious coin & serious coin students will not pay.

A good mate of mine who runs a pretty good school is thinking of tossing the instructor ratings in, doesn't pay anymore.

In that case, I recommend Sandy (ex-Tyabb CFI etc) or Russ (ex-RAAF) both of whom are currently running instructor courses at Moorabbin at different schools.

Yes, let's discuss this at Watts Bridge this weekend. Bob Tait may be around to offer his advice too.

Enough manoeuvres to compete in AAC Advanced: currently the only additional manoeuvre to be endorsed beyond the basic aerobatics is inverted spins which is certainly required for Advanced Category.

Given the cost of the Instructor Rating, and the amount of 'other than instructing' pilot jobs going at the moment, my advice would be to try and get the latter.

or Russ (ex-RAAF)
Is that RL, otherwise known to some as Russbo? Just asking out of interest to see where he's at these days.

50 hours- can be 20 mutual. I did all dual, and apart from the cost, I'm glad I did. My instructors must have been sick of me as I sponged every bit of info and tip I could out of em .

As far as instructors go, I'd talk to the actual person/s who will deliver the course, and if means that much to you, go for a fly with them.

You will sniff out good and bad operators if you do the research and use ya instincts.. I would only recommend a very small handful. PM me if you want. There are still operators out there who care about quality.

As far as teaching approvals for various ratings endo's etc, you need to get em separately, and as far as I can tell, part 61 is the result of a very long period of time sitting in a room, alone with nothing to do..

"I know!, il rewrite the docs" said the lone muppett " I won't change anything, but everyone will have to rewrite their ops manuals and I can generally cause everyone a fair bit of pain in their behinds..what fun!"

Whatever..

Instructor Rating

You will find the details in CAO 40.1.7 (50 hours total) and there are very little changes to the instructor rating coming in December.

I couldn't recommend Curtis Aviation at Camden highly enough. I don't work there but have a lot of dealings with them on a daily basis. They do a fair bit of instructor training and can even do the test if CASA doesn't want to do it.

My next choice would be Pacific Flight Services at Bankstown.

Hope this helps, I know choosing the wrong school for this rating turns into a nightmare.
