BNE En Route moving to Melbourne?
I read somewhere on these forums of a rumour that Brisbane en route would be consolidated with the melbourne office, one en route in Melbourne. The post was a few years old, does anybody have any new information on this?

Yes - well I'm not in the know, not even an ATC.
And as I said, I read a couple of posts in this forum that mention melb/bne merger.
My curiosity comes from a desire to apply for the ATC course. Now if there is a project under way or in the pipeline to move BNE en route resources to Melbourne, this is yet another factor for me to consider.

The tender docs for the new ATC system call for the provision of two centres and separate costing for a remote TCU... Presumably then they can make a decision about Remote TCUs and work out if they want 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of them... Remembering that the new system is supposed to provide RAAF integration... But 2 centres will be definitely part of the 'future'.
There were also system limitations - it wasn't capable of handling the entire Australian airspace and had to be split. There should no such problem with the new system. Given enough bandwidth it would be possible to run it all as one system which would simplify matters somewhat.
No chance of that happening. Undoubtedly new system could handle all of Oz from one location.
The problem comes in trying to move all Brissy staff to Melbourne - voluntary redundancies come into play as part of the move and there would be a lot of staff that would take the redundancy rather than move to Melbourne. End result ATC staff shortage, which I'm sure the new CEO does not want to reoccur.

The whole reason for the 2 centre policy is disaster recovery. They'll never move the Aust FIR into one centre, all of the eggs would be in one basket.
Either center has to have the capacity to handle the whole AU FIR. In recent years, terrorist attacks have probably been added to fire or other disasters as a reason for two well separated and self contained facilities.

Your bean-counters and middle management, that have have bugger-all experience at the coal-face, have had this one up their sleeves for ages.
Disaster recovery Hempy? Doesn't even come into their lexicon. It's all about business 'efficiency.' Disaster recovery is old news and impractical if anyone knows anything about the logistics.

If the planets align when the new system is introduced, what's the problem in saying to you: 'Move to MLB or you ain't got a job?' Staff shortages and neglect (TIBA) haven't worried them so far. They'll get away with it. Nobody out there in voter-land gives a stuff.
The Minister for Bad Teeth just wants to keep a lid on all of this.
Ultimately, no one outside of aviation cares. It'll be bend over or you don't have a job. That's the way the suits operate. Believe me, I've been there.
In 2000, I was told by one of your 'middle managers' (one of the more competent) that your senior management was well aware that serious staff shortages were coming. He showed me a graph and described the 'black hole' that was coming in 2006. Too many people going and no recruitment and training to meet the projected shortfall.
He was seriously concerned about the future, but the suits didn't listen and you have what you've got at the moment.
End point? They've got away with neglect and will continue to do so.
Consolidating everything in MLB will be a breeze for the suits - and it's bound to be upfront on the agenda. Buy beanies and thermals. This is coming.
