I recently paid a visit to the Queensland Air Museum to see the old Fokker F27 VH-FNQ, an aircraft I last flew in May 1982. I was shocked to see the amount of corrosion with major structural components literally delaminating. Corrosion was everywhere to the point I think it is past saving. I would hate to think what is inside that Belfast sight unseen. At one stage it was up to the axles in flood water.

A visit to QAM is sure a lesson in corrosion of aircraft. The ones stored under cover may be fairing a little better. I wonder how the environment at Cairns compares to Caloundra?

Certainly shows why regular fresh water washdown of maritime patrol and shipboard aircraft is important.

Even if a brown paper bag under the desk secures a ferry permit from its state of registry, there’s no way CASA or Airservices will permit it to depart CNS over, or adjacent to, populated areas, so what flight path is available for such a beast as the Belfast? Who would have the courage to grant permission for it to attempt a takeoff?
The only way it will ever move is in pieces that will fit on a truck.

(finished it for you)

Very defeatist statements there.
I’m sure the business folk expending time effort and dollars are not tarting up a dead duck. Once it has its CoA or Permit to fly, and it checks out like any other aircraft then it should be allowed to depart.Southbound and an early turn over the old 12 strip and built up areas are avoided.
Those that are putting it back to work, and saving a rarity in the process should be commended

Or wait for conducive conditions and depart from runway 33, with a gentle right turn over the sea

I second that. If lightly loaded it should be up up and away away, no worries.

CASA don’t care about the prestige or history of it, or the hard labour spent getting it to this point, don’t go down that path with them, trust me.

What is the black staff on top of the wings?

Black stuff on top of the wings. Mould probably. A feature in the wet tropics. Easily knocked off with a gurney.

What could possibly wrong?

Given the heat that CASA are receiving in relation to airworthiness standards thanks to the puk puk fella’s, I doubt it will ever fly again..

Unless they plan on creating an artificial reef with it in front of the RSL🍺🍺🍺🍺

Just a little surface corrosion. Lightly abrade with scotch brite, alodine and prime. Good as new.

And to just make sure it's completely covered up and hidden, prime it up and throw 3 coats of high gloss duco on it.

Lay it on extra thick just outboard of the bathtub fittings in an attempt to cover up the intergranular corrosion.

I may have once been a JAFA, however if that old Belfast doesn't have intergranular corrosion in its substructures, I will walk naked through Myer's in Cairns!!!!

I'm pretty sure that would violate this Forum's family-friendly policies.. although the subsequent mass evacuation of Myers would certainly wake up the local population!

I once knew a ground instructor Derek McPhail who flew the Belfast. He taught Senior Commercial Navigation in Perth. A great fella got me through grid nav.
