Flinders Island NAVEX
Planning on doing a night or 2 camping at Flinders Island, take the GF etc.
Just wondering what maps i'd require, I'm looking at getting the WAC obviously, but would it be necessary to get a TAS(Hobart/Launceston) VTC/VNC ?
Also if people have done this before what was the best route they took?
I'm planning on leaving the Vic coastline via wilsons prom and going via Deal Isl.
Anyway any tips advice would be appreciated, cheers.

You'll need a WAC because the VNC doesn't go down far enough but you won't need the Tassie maps.
The standard route from Moorabbin would take you near Leongatha and down via the western side of the Prom, past Deal etc as you have already suggested so you have that part right.
Let me know if you need a contact there for facilities etc. Pick some good weather and you're good to go!

Tas WAC has the complete Flinders Island on it. You need Melbourne WAC to get there.
Looking at Google Earth there appears to be some clear ground on Deal but no airstrip.

I've done that run many a times many years ago with various G/F's, one of whom I married !...........second biggest mistake that was !
Mostly done in SE planes, yeah I know 'jabba' that was back when I was young & dumb !:-)
The route as suggested here by the others is the only way to go, Island hop stay within gliding distance of their shores where possible.
Make sure you have 2 ELT's & lots of survival gear. Charts etc as mentioned here also.
Now the important bit. Have an escape plan at all times whilst traveling that route. I've been caught a few times due lousy wx. Once got stuck on YFLI for 3 extra days (VH TIZ,C210) due low cloud/rain. Another time got caught in Corner Inlet (near the Prom)due low cloud at 500ft flying in circles over the water, luckily was able to fly down the coast eastwards towards a strip (can't think of it's name right now) where I was able to land & had to spend the night there.
FLI is a great place to visit if you like privacy & solitude.Lots of history on that Island too,some not so good.
Take clothes to suit ALL climates:-) FLI is the only place where wood rusts!
The Walkers & the Bowmens used to run pretty much the main places there at Whitmark, am sure Stan Walker is long gone. Do a Google search on Walker @ Flinder Island, should yield plenty.
Enjoy the experience but don't go unprepared.
P.s..........don't be tempted to go to YKII, it's nowhere near as appealing !

Killiecrankie on the north western tip of Flinders Island is a great little hamlet. They were building holiday cabins when I was last there 13 years ago. There's a good strip there too.
Stunning beaches, clear water, although a tad fresh. The strip is (obscured) at the bottom of this pic.

Whats the word on camping around Killiecrankie if anyone has been? How far of a walk will we have to go to the beach (taking tent and backpacks with food etc).
Does anyone know any information about camping in the area? I'm going to ring the Killiecrankie Aerodrome to have a chat see what they say, will update.

I spent 8 days camped at the base of the big mountain in the distance about 30m from te water with a bunch of rock climbing mates. The scrub is very thick, and finding spots for bush walking tents difficult.
Tiger snakes abound, and te climbing spectacular, if somewhat undergraded.
No reason not to camp on the beach I guess. Tide dependent. Here's a pic from the other side of the headland.

Yes, also pretty sure the Deal Island strip was closed, still plan for it as a waypoint...better a closed strip than no strip................
As wally said, plan to island hop. If you don't want that, if you spend some time on the chart, you can do it with 2 turn points over islands that both minimises your turn point numbers and maximum distance from land.
I've done the run in SE a couple of times. On the right day, its extremely rewarding, on the wrong day quite challenging.

Scary flight in a single engine!
My first time across the ditch was ferrying a C152 to Devonport. Even the controller had to ask me twice where I was going.
Went via Wilson prom-Deal island-Flinders. Loved every minute of it.

Yeah read that, SP1 of GEN - Not really a lot of information on it even in that. Just talks about reporting which is pretty standard although I'll probably logon to NAIPS and submit a flight notification so probably be the same thing...
Nice pic of the bushwalking, looked really good cheers. - I don't think i'll actually sit on the beach(set tent up), was more just off the sand (maybe dunes/shrubs) but wake up and go for a dip, chuck a line in etc.
