I enjoyed every minute. Anything to do with aircraft gets my vote.

Easy in and out for Sunday....!!!!

What a great show.....

Landed on main RWY18 at 9:30..... Marshalled to parking across from the Roulettes......excellent static and flying displays....... Free lunch care of Hawkers and flew out on RWY18 at 5:00......... As always not what you know its who you know........ Or better still who you've got in the back......

Thanks Avalon!

So tell us JJ, which VIP were you carrying - surely not the big fella who leases the joint.... (At least give us a hint).

Of course, when I am watching my beloved Bombers from the lofty confines of the Medallion Club at Etihad Stadium, it is certainly much more enjoyable than being in the stalls at ground level with the sun in my face all afternoon.

I saw Ted Bay-loo on the back of a golf cart? Was this your said pax?

Although, come to think of it, the only thing I can remember across from the Roulettes was an Albratros.

Why couldn't they get a display pilot over to fly the F22?
Couldn't even bring in an F15 to take its place in the sky?

747 was on the schedule list on the website for Friday. Apparently it flew out before the gates opened at 2pm?

C17 didnt fly on friday. Fair enough the NZ 757 wasn't there that I can understand...

Yet again no russian jets... wouldn't want to upstage the americans

All in all I was hoping for a better airshow as the last 2 were let downs. Nothing new.

Result? Less than the previous year. Doesn't help theres no F111 or Caribou flying anymore. Just shortened the list even more.

Not to mention no time table except for the one in the information booth. Amazingly you could take a photo of it on your phone for free to reference later. those $10 airshow books didnt even have a time table. it was just a rough guide - same thing as on the website.

Fail.

Easy in and out for Sunday!!
I recall seeing a very nice Super King Air backing up into position opposite the Roulettes. Walking past and seeing the passengers hop out, I thought, now that is a nice way to arrive.

Because there is only one authorised display pilot, and he is currently training a new guy to be the display pilot (but I guess he is no longer 'the display pilot'). Unfortunate, but even on the ground they looked great.
Something about displays being risky business \

I'm currently tending to some pretty bad sunburn from the airshow. Photos to come soon!

At least the Yanks look the part as well as act the part
At least they pick the smarter ones, but with 310 million to chose from I guess they can find 1 or 2, maybe even 3

One question I have to ask and that's been thrown around very recently is, will we see an Avalon 2013?

Given the record crowd this year, there's no doubt Avalon 2013 will happen.

Yes that Kingair was a very nice aircraft.

He was a bit of a prima donna. He did not have the required prior permission from ASDU (all charters and private flyers were required to go VFR to Avalon East). ATC and ASDU did the right thing and let him in. Then at 4 pm he decides he wants to go and taxis to holding point and calls. ATC says no as the flying display is still happening so he gets stuck into them. ATC quite rightly insisted he shut down at the holding point and wait until the display finished at 5 pm.

Did he not read AIP SUP? Or maybe he thought it didn't apply to him? Just as well there were not too many like that.......

I saw that Kingair taxy up then shutdown during the latter part ofthe show. I wonderered what he was up to. I hope he got nice and hot sitting on the taxyway with both shutdown!! Serves him right. Even I could read the AIP.

Overall a good show, bloody big crowd.

Does anyone know how many turned up Sun?

B1

So does anyone know why the B1 just turned up at one of the RAAF bases on its way home?

Gear problem. Needed jacks that Avalon don't have. MickB will post a picture with the mains locked away with the nose gear still in the breeze.

Both B1 s got airborne on Monday about Midday for departure. Those who saw the B1 on flying display days saw it get airborne in about 1200 m or so, very speccy, but when full to the guts with fuel they were really using a lot of runway 36, in fact most of it, to get up and away, except they didn't go away, they went round and round a few times with one with wheel up and one with wheels down. wheels up then departed to the north on climb and wheels down departed to the south for about 45 min and when they came back they landed back on AV. I was on the way home by then so missed the return.

I suppose there are a few hundred thousand pounds of jet A1 floating around in bass straight, possibly close to where it gets dug up, that lightened the load for Hawk 01's landing.

The B1 may have had a crap operational career in the USAF, but is the only military jet that rings my bell more than the F111.

I had a chat with the pilots on sunday morning, and they were pretty cool dudes who just love that monster.

I spoke to several non aviation enthusiasts today that went, their first or second time around. They all loved it. To them its like the Royal Show, they dont take scanners, chairs, binos, tape recorders, 20k worth of lenses, 4 cameras, a video, take regos, measure speeds or compare it to anything but the movie Top Gun.

Sometimes I wish I was like that, it would be easier.

On the bus to YAVE after Sunday, a message came over the bus, or was it coach? radio. A polly needed a gate opened urgently to get in somewhere. As a chorus the entire compliment cried out "tell him to get.... let the bastard wait.. who does he think he is...where is he....gimme the mic!" it was a blast.
