Trying to get back into the industry
Gday all,
I have been out of the industry nearly 2 years after being made redundant
Have about 7000 hrs
5000+ multi command including turbo prop and small jet
400 hrs float time
Check and training experience
I have been trying to get back in for about 5 months doing anything within the industry without any luck
Thinking of giving it all away and trying something else or maybe I can do an instructor rating as it something I have been interested in doing for a while now
Q?
At 45 years old is this a viable option?
any advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

I'm in the exact same boat Maxx but with less than half your experience. at the same age.
It's an absolute living hell for me as flying was my life. Been either doing it or trying to get a job doing it since I was a teenager.
As in the past I am going to keep trying but it is seemingly impossible to break the catch 22, where when you need a flying job you can't get an interview because you don't have one and haven't had one in a while. Then even if you do get one and it goes well, others will be chosen over you because they are currently flying and you are not, all other things being equal.
Those that are lucky enough to already have a flying job therefore get to move onward and upward with their careers and you cannot get a look in or move forward.
It is unimaginably frustrating to all those who are passionate and dedicated about flying and in this position. Those that have never had to go through it for any length of time have no idea just how much.
I empathize completely with your situation.
I am constantly reminding local employers I am available and ready to go ASAP when an opportunity presents itself.
Many other pilots are in the same boat at present no doubt, across Australia and also in most other countries thank to the GFC and it's long term effects.
I am trying to stay hopeful but it is extremely difficult as the years go by.
I am trying to keep the faith.
Best of luck mate.
PS- I am adding this post script because I know what some people on this forum are like.
Please, to all those reading this thread, some words of encouragement /suggestions would be appreciated if you feel like commenting at all.
Negative comments and flames are not!!
If you feel like posting those kind of comments you think long and hard about how EVERY aspect of your life, including your personality would change if you lost your job today, effective immediately, and you couldn't fly again for 2-3years MINIMUM.
Thank you.

Hang on in there Maxx.
We old fogies with a bit of time up (flight and life experience) are needed in GA more than the industry is kind enough to admit.
Well said Aussie

Thanks guys
Cheers Guys
Thanks for the comments guys, its hard to stay positive when you are constantly told you either dont meet the requirements or there are no jobs around.
Especialy when you hear from mates in the industry that younger less experienced pilots are getting into dream jobs.
A mate of mine who is a Captain with Virgin recently told me a very young low time pilot just got a job with the company and he has been there about 3 months, still training and is bitching and moaning about the job already.
Some people just dont know how good they have got it.
Chin still up with shoulders back

G'Day Maxx,
Long time no speak. Have you tried REX? We have been accepting a small trickle of direct entries recently and glancing over the seniority list last night, the expereinced and upgradeable FOs are starting to get very thin on the ground. More direct entries are inevitable in my view. PM me if you want more info.
Cheers,
Pretzal

I'll second what Pretzal says MAXX.
You know we sometimes forget just how soul destroying this game can be. I've had 3 G/A companys and 1 airline go bust underneath me, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't give thanks for the relative stability that we now have.
As far as the youngun's not knowing how lucky they are, well I guess you'll always get that from some of them. Truth is there may be a shake-up at DJ (what to do with the international guys/possible reductions at the bottom?) The young guy might just be in for a lesson in life! I sincerely hope not, but in this game nothing is 100% certain.
Hang in there mate. Pretzal is right, REX have been thin on the ground with experienced F/O's for some time. Management are starting to see the light. Just keep at them.
