It seems REX is the only airline offering abnitio entry/cadet ships. Every other airline doesn't offer it anymore. Is that a comment in the amount of out of work pilots? And charging $25k upfront, is it worth it?

Probably more a matter of pragmatism winning over egotism.

I was asked the other day if they would take a cadet with a PPL licence and CPL subjects? I didn't have an answer. Anyone here know?

Hey keen to hear from anyone who's done the interview and the academic testing for the Cadetship. More interested in what sort of maths and/or physics questions are asked?

Courious to know if a TAFE Maths bridging course would be enough? Would PPL and all CPL theory credits look positive?

Maybe someone who's recently joined the Cadetship could shine some light on what it's like?

Hey, I was invited to sit the wombat this week, any advice anyone? I worry a little that I'll get in, pay the 25k, then for some reason not end up with a job, because rex have made it clear they can kick you out whenever they want, for no reason.

Last year according to Rex career website, Rex cadetship Rex022 intake was supposed to start in Nov 2016. Then in Nov 2016, noticed Rex022 was shown on the website to start in April 2017. In April 2017 the website show Rex022 start date as June 2017. Just check and now Rex022 shown to start in Aug 2017.

Anybody else noticed this?, and any ideas?

From the Rex FAQ's:
http://rex.com.au/cadetpilot/cadet_faq.pdf

The first phase of the Programme up to the PPL stage is the probationary period. Cadets who are deemed unsuitable during or at the conclusion of the probationary period, at Rex's sole discretion, will be asked to leave the Programme.
Yep, they can, technically, kick you out of the program with no explanation. However they aren't actually going to kick you out unless you give them a reason. Maybe you consistently show up late for classes. Maybe you show you have an arrogant attitude. Maybe you show a tendency to break the rules.

They'll be monitoring your performance throughout the course and if they see attitudes or behaviours you consistently display but are unwilling to change which they realise will make you unsuitable to be a pilot with them they'll have reason to kick you out. Basically the cadetship is a very long job interview

It's up to you to put the work in and accept any honest feedback or constructive criticism about your behaviour if you want to pass the course.

Not sure. This week I received an invitation to do the Wombat, maybe they are planning on an August start for 022?

Essentially once you arrive in Wagga you have the job. As the Doc said; you have to give them a reason to get rid of you. Turnover in the company is quite high still so they always need F/O's coming through.....as it's a transitional place, mgmt know and expect this.

The delayed starts are usually again because of resources; not many training captains and importantly instructors in Wagga to get the ball rolling.

Good luck with your test on the Commodore 64 (WOMBAT test)

Is there really any guarantee of this though?

I can picture REX using this as a carrot, and then you find your 3 years instructing turning into 4 then 5 with no hope of ever moving into the RPT op.

Well having a quick look around it seems the cheapest rate for a CPL is around $65-75000. Add to that around $15-20000 for an instructor rating. And an instrument rating which you will eventually need as well.

The $105k for the cadetship will turn out to be financially better in the long term. Considering you'll get on an airline salary and seniority list straight away, be able to get a command and pay increase sooner, and you'll be able to go on to bigger and more highly paid jobs sooner with your multi crew turboprop time.

You don't pay back the full $105k if you stay the full 7 year minimum employment term. Out of $105k, you would have paid 25k up front, company loans the other 75K of which you pay back 50k during the employment. And if you stay the full 7 years they wipe the rest. So you would only end up paying 75k from Ab-initio all the way to Saab 340 type rating.
