What is it about the C180/185
G'day tinpis
Yes, same as, and because it's longer...hard to get a grip so that your fingers can touch the panel, while keeping the lock depressed with your hand.
If I remember rightly, DJU also had a tailwheel locking device.....or did it?? A long time ago. The Bishop of Daru must have ordered a few optional extras??
happy days,

I've come across the tail locks but never seen the vernier throttle
What kind of madness was that?
The best throttle was for me the little nautical jobby in the Porter
I nearly got a start in 1970 with STOL but hiring was in in limbo as Patair were buying them.

Odd bits
Re the vernier throttle, which may have been the only knob available one day, one ag-180 had a large round "house" door knob on the pass. side (which said door came off in flight once), and another had a Piper style trim wheel on the roof.
When the super stopped flowing past the tail plane it goes nose heavy . . just when you want a tight turn, so a fast trim was handy.

Vernier throttle control.
I think a couple of (185's) I flew had vernier throttle controls, but you had to have your thumb or the palm of your hand palm on the button to be able to change the power in a hurry. (BVJ and WAV from memory were 2 of them)

Just been reading about 182 conversions. The 182D seems to have the extra window like a 185. Can anyone tell me if they are the same airframe and if the conversion is possible on the D model?
DWD
I have heard of it being done. Try Paul Mitrega at inverell. He has converted a fair few 182's to 180's.
The 182D shares the "same" airframe with the 180G.
The 182D has the swept tail though.
On another matter, I have just put the IO-550D 300hp in my 185.
This replaces the IO-520D 300hp for t/o and 285hp continuous.
Goes damned well. 145-150 ktias at 4000 25"/2300rpm.
Trues out to around 150-155 KTAS for 68-72LPH.
Take off roll is reduced slightly and the climb rate is improved.
It's going to be hard to keep slow for any survey work.

Just to contribute my opinion of the great Skywagon...
Had an E model since 2000. Picture an airplane that will carry 1,000# from a 700' strip, fly for 5+30 and land on a 700' strip...and look good while doing it. With Sportsman cuff, WingX extensions and VG's it will perform even better. Great airplane.

C100,
fuel flows are up but so is speed.
However, when I setup for a similar airspeed as before they are about the same as the last engine.
Desert185, I concur with all you say.

Cracker you got the Gamis and EDM for LOP?
IO550 runs VERY well LOP.
Me departing Paunui a few weeks ago...loaded CGG up with Dave and 3 of my Trolley dollies and went to see a work mates new house - kinda cool landing and parking on his back lawn. In fact we went two days running and took 6 Trollies all up...day 1, the day before this vid, the weather was utterly calm and cloudless...awesome run around the Coramandle Peninsular going the 'long way' to Paunui. The day Sarge remembered his camera was drizzly and windy...still awesome fun...went to Great barrier Island enroute Paunui this day...well I can say I have been to GBR...wont be racing back.
Just gotta love the grunty noise...even its 'only' an IO470. Was fun flying the old girl reasonably loaded too - well all seats filled - nice to get the CofG back a little more than with just two up.
Not sure I posted this before...not on this thread anyway...coming back in formation with another Kiwi mate, Graham, in his G500 equipped IFR 185 from Raglan. Both Dave and Graham reckon its the best formation vid of a C185 on youtube
No argument they are a bloody good looking aeroplane. And NZ is the Southern Hemisphere home of Cessna taildraggers.

Never had any cylinder off, or valve problems in 5 x IO-520 engines so far.
all have gone to time plus a bit more.
they just don't run all that hot in the 185 installation.

The exhaust shroud and cowl louvers really keep the CHT's down, especially running LOP with GAMI's. Closing the cowl flaps a bit sooner, as a result, makes for a bit more climb rate and speed.
Adding a not so popular Skywagon option (Knots2U flap gap seals) nets a 3-5 MPH cruise speed increase with NO INCREASE in stalling speed. A 500 FPM climb near sea level results in a cruise climb IAS of 157 MPH...this with 8.50's, bubble windows, Sportsman cuff, WingX and Micro Aero VG's. Prop is an 86" two-blade. Descent planning had to be modified slightly, also, as the speed doesn't slow as quickly. My buddy is getting the same results.
The 185 is a winner.
