Old mate with a 90 knot Piper was harping on about how good the 495 is versus his old 296. Increased refresh rate is very noticeable (if using in track up display on map versus north up) and if scrolling ahead with the cursor, plus terrain detail far more enhanced and the voice prompts are standard which are not in the 296. Eg. pull up, pull up, terrain ahead in 60 seconds, etc. Screen brightness on half is greater than full brightness on the 296.

Screen brightness is relative to which version I think....I cant be bothered looking now, but the later 296's have a much better screen than the early one like I had previously.

I've had my 296 going on groundspeeds of around the 220 kt mark - coped fine with it, although I normally have it on a large CDI display (no moving map) unless specifically required. With regards to the terrain maps - I can see how they're good in theory - but if you're relying on the terrain warning features of a 296 or similar for actual terrain avoidance, I think you're doing something wrong.

Interesting looking at the prices. There are some good buys there. Handheld Systems seems pretty switched on looking at what he offers GPS wise, other than aviation.

Can these GPS's be used for IFR or do they have to be mounted in the aeorplane?

I notice that the 495 has a terrain alert system. Is that to alert pilots that illegally fly in cloud that the ground is near them?
