I bought my Garmin 96C and David Clarke 13.4's here.

ozpilot.com.au - Pilot Supplies from Mendelssohn Pilot Supplies

They seem to have the best prices.

Ditto with Training Wheels.

I have a 296. Very similar to the 495 (well exactly the same save for some terrain issues and processor speed I think)

They are a fantastic unit. I would not fly without one.

I believe that Handheld Systems - Handheld Systems are very good.

rioncentu 17th Aug 2009 10:53

Geez that Handheld mob is nowhere near the real price for these units.

Try gulf coast avionics in Florida, not aus but when they make prices fairer I will shop here online.

Just had a look at Handhelds and they seem to be cheaper than Ozpilot.

Interesting.....

1st OZ dealer.......$2150....begins with 'M'
2nd OZ dealer.......$2140...begins with 'H'

USA dealer ......USD$1595...which on conversion says AUD$1939,
plus international postage, handling, Customs if applicable, GST if applicable etc...

Not much in it really I would have thought? :ok:

Based on that, those OZ prices are a good buy. I can't you doing much better then. It's funny how it works, sometimes you can save a bunch and that doesn't always relate to the exchange rate.

It's so cheap in comparison to the competition that I'm left wondering, why?

Wow, some of those prices from those website links above have just taken a tumble. Their owners must have been reading this thread! lol!

Small variations in price may be due to fluctuating exchange rates.

Aeroshop has been around for ages and is one of the original Garmin authorised importers, you would have no issues in buying off them.

Ps. I also know the owner personally, ex airline jockey.

Ex FSO GRIFFO 18th Aug 2009 07:28

On that recommendation, I'd be going for 'Aeroshop' and give your business to an Aussie I reckon......
$1895 and its HERE!!:ok::ok:

VH-XXX 23rd Aug 2009 10:12

Did you get one?

Spoke to a flying mate today, just sold his 296 for $900 on web, then bought 495 from Aeroshop for $1,890. Extremely happy with it, refresh rate much better, you don't realize until you see the difference including the panel page, 10 times more detail on the terrain page, voice prompts for terrain "terrain, terrain, pull up, pull up" same as 430's, plus screen MUCH brighter so much so that on half brightness seemed brighter than 296.

From what I have heard a number of units have been sold purely as a result of the pricing mentioned here on prune. The power of advertising!

Mendelsohn's are grey market sellers of Garmin, so you can't get Garmin warranty in Australia.

ksa5223 23rd Sep 2009 10:44

So when I can afford a 495/496, is aus going to get XM weather in the next few years ? Or is it pointless spending all that cash on the 496.

ForkTailedDrKiller 23rd Sep 2009 10:49

I was told (although I can't confirm) that you would only notice the difference at speeds much higher than most GA aircraft can do
Yeah, I had to upgrade to a 496 when I got the Bo cause the 296 just couldn't process fast enough to keep up with it!

The 296 seems to handle Jaba's Mk 10 Retard Vehicle though! :E

Dr :8

Jabawocky 23rd Sep 2009 11:31

Yeah.... it seems to cope up to about 200 knots:E, so depending on wheter you think the update rate is that critical.......

mind you the 495 is much harder to program, Forkie his displays in MPH and thinks that is why his FTDK is really fast!:E
