Student Film Featuring Your Aircraft

Hi all,

For my HSC Drama course I have to complete a Individual Project, I am creating a film that is based around 'The Day in the Life of a Pilot' with a Mr. Bean style spin.

The plot goes that he wakes up early in the morning, slightly worse for wear, and arrives at work where various things go wrong (not the least of which being he can't find his gate). The ending gag is that after all this effort all he is actually flying is a small single engine plane (Piper Warrior or similar).

What I need is for someone to lend me some of their and their aircrafts time. It will involve an hour of filming of a the 'pilot', yourself (and any others needed to fill the seats of your aircraft). Then I will take a couple of different shots of the aircraft taxiing away (with you at the controls obviously). And that's it.

The engine would only be turning for the taxi shots which would take no more than 15 minutes to film and I am happy to pay a contribution (in line with a standard hire rate) so as not to cost you too much.

I am located in the Sydney Area so Camden, Bankstown, Richmond, Newcastle, Cessnock or anywhere around there would be best.

I somehow suspect that the image (Mr Bean, slightly worse for wear etc) is not compatable with that of a professional pilot.

I doubt anybody here would wish to be portrayed in the manner you envisage.

Totally understand. Remember it's not you who is the 'pilot' one of my class mates is portraying the 'pilot'. Yes he is bumbling but it's just a light hearted look at what could go wrong. [Quick Edit: Before you all jump on my neck wrong simply means cutting himself shaving, getting lost at the gate and so on, basically the opposite of the suave pilot image we all have!]

If it's not your cup of tea I won't hold it against you

Can I just suggest that it shouldn't cost the person who helps you anything at all seeing as it's your project and they'd be giving up their time? Generally you don't ask people for help/favours and then expect them to share in the cost.

That's exactly what I meant. Say for example we get a Piper Warrior most places hire it out for about $180. Say we film for 20mins I will pay 20mins at that rate. A case may also be provided :P

As it is only a student film the statement you quoted was meant to clarify that you wouldn't be paid like you would if it was a 'real' hollywood film. I obviously don't want you to walk away out of pocket so 20mins before one of your flights for me to sit there and get some stuff is ideal.

Besides that I am open to negotiation you might want the money donated to RFDS or Angel Flight, or whatever. I am asking for your help and so am adaptable to your conditions (the reasonable ones only of course!)

Ok but to me 'not to cost you too much' sounds a lot different to 'not to cost you anything'. The former sounds like you're expecting cost sharing. You could probably just try and call a flight school and book something. If you're lucky they may just let you film before a routine instructional flight and it won't cost you anything at all.

Good luck with the assignment.

The above post was a great idea.

Also, you might not even have to pay more than $100 if you just do a trial instructional flight which gives you more than enough time for the taxiing, and even some time in the air if need be.

But, that does defeat the purpose of a TIF.

I would have helped but my career in pistons was short-lived. In saying that though, I don't think it would be feasible to allow a student to begin filming at YSSY of jets taxiing

Good luck though

If you go down to one of the operators nearby and have a yarn to them i'm sure someone will help you out mate. I'd do it myself but im not in your area. It doesnt cost much to taxi a plane around, I cant imagine it being too much of an issue.

I'm very disappointed in Pruners on this occasion! If the poster was in Melbourne, I would be MORE than happy to assist and I wouldn't care if it costed a few dollars and would only be too happy to be involved!

Suggest dropping into an aero club if you get stuck - hopefully there might be a few aircraft owners in there that can help. If you have a school uniform, try wearing it when you go there which should help you.

Thanks guys for your support and ideas.

I tried my own flying club but they didn't like the idea of being associated with a comedy (the same 'professional image' issues mentioned above) which is dissapointing but fair enough.

I will try some of the other clubs/schools/companies to see what comes out of the woodwork as well.
