AV8 in Brisbane - how are they?

Hi all

yes I know there was a 4 pg posting on AV8 in bris however this hasn't been responeded to in >12 months and I didn't want to get my post lost in the 4 pages. Plus I wanted a more updated response if possible.

I've been pricing up the diff packages and they 'seem' to be quite cheap (I'm not stupid either ) however their total package incl ME/CIR is (per their website) $46k compared to $58k for RQAC!! thats what, $12k?

Breakdown is:

GFPT/PPL - $13,600 (most quote approx $18k)
CPL - $18,600 = total $32k approx for full CPL (most quote $45k)
ME/CIR = $11k - Total of approx $45k (most quote $58k).

anyway, has anyone completed their flying there lately? I know the above prices are based on the minimum amount of time, etc - what are your thoughts?

Thanks

Hi Pharoh,

Mate of mine rang me today wanting to hire my tommy for his son who is on a 250 hour CPL with AV8, they don't seem to have any flyable aircraft at the moment - he's been at the airport every day and hasn't flown in a week!

GB also appears to be their only ATO they choose to use however word has it he is very unwell at the moment and they are unable to do any testing.

It's going the same way ATC went, excuses, delays, stalling.

Really hoped they would have learnt something but it appears not.

Personally I would make the extra few miles and go and see the Redcliffe Aero Club.

Sure they fly excessively wide circuits and sure its full of mozies but decent instructors, great training environment and its committee run.

...

(I am not a member of the YRED Aero Club - if i anything I curse them at all possible costs for their above mentioned wide ass circuits when they turn base at Beachmere)

GB is not the only testing officer AV8 use. They had two CPL tests this weekend just gone. Both failed because the ATO held them to a much higher standard than I think was anticipated.

I agree with you about going to see RAC. AV8/FTA has gone downhill recently. Air Gold Coast look good too. Very approachable and realistic.

Interesting post Aerohooligan.......

What stanadrd would you expect a commercial pilot to meet?... Just good enough or something safer and more professional?

And is your reply saying something about GB's testing standards or not?

Not connected with AV8 in any way, just curious.

Hi Pharoh,

Run away, run at all costs, don't look back, keep running, when you hit Nathan road, slow down, look behind you, if there is an AV8 sign behind you, assume previous assigned heading and RUN!

People didn't learn when they went broke the first time and went to AV8, people said they've changed, they're different...whoops!

Only thing different is the name.

...

PS: Have you started running yet? no? you should, time is running out

lol thats funny. yeah well I'm still an accountant by trade so I know the old 'you get what you pay for' saying.

I'm planning on RQAC anyway - just thought I'd explore the 'cheaper' option for what its worth.

So makeithappencaptain, would you recommend flying with them? also, is there a reason why their quoted costs are substantially lower than the competition? Makes a big diff to me.

Pharoah,

Ok, they've been taken over by another group, still same aircraft, same CFI.

The only way you make change in an organisation is to start fresh.

I am only going on what I have seen of Arena pilots and that there are students sitting on the ground unable to get aircraft to fly triyng to cross hire from other schools and owners.

I would suggest you are safer and more guaranteed of a happy outcome with RQAC then AV8.

In life you get the goods and the bads, but sometimes you also get the down right shockers!

Mate, whatever price you are quoted, increase that by at least 20% and in AV8's case probably 50%.

My CPL/MECIR, completed in close to minimum hours, plus a tailwheel endo and some private flying to boot, cost in total around $79,000 and I'm still paying off my debts (and yes, debts plural - to many people and institutions). CPL alone was $56k (165 hours [the min being 150hrs] plus private flights - without the privates probably would have been about $54k).

Do yourself a favour and don't consider AV8. Your primary consideration in flight training should be quality, not cost (easy to say, now that I'm finished, I know). AV8 cannot meet the time or cost targets quoted. Further, you cannot get a refund if you elect to stop training any more than a week after starting and everything is geared towards making money than anything else.

If you really must train at Archerfield, try Royal QLD Aero Club. They're about the only school of some quality remaining there. You're really best off going to Air Gold Coast or to Redcliffe Aero Club.

Hope that's some help.

av8 training

G'day guys,
i recently fiinished training at av8 and let me tell you that my time there was not an enjoyable experience.
to start there is no testing officer there anymore as GB is nolonger the CFI so getting a test is a problem to start with. once you are enrolled in the school they only seem interested in your money and there is no concern for customer care. there is often problems with backlogged 100hourlys or just plain ******. the instructors dont really care there just there to build there hours.
nothing ever gets organised and there is no communication between the staff and the students are not considered important enough to be imformed about any problems that might concern them.
and finaly at the final end of your training they stall your progress and cancel test bookings so that they can keep you around for longer in an attempt to milk more money from you in attempt to stop them from goin under.

I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere. redcliffe or the gold coast. archerfield seems to be past its prime!
