If you have a look at the weather map there is simular conditions over much of the east coast all weekend.
I hope you're not saying that such a well equipped aircraft should not be out under last nights conditions!

IAM? Was that an "Island Airlines" machine once? Rings a bell, might have flown it.
Am sure there will be a lot more about this event to come in the next few weeks.

Ofcourse I'm not HH. My response is to those that believe we should not speculate as to the reason this accident occured. I am not a believer in sitting on ones hands and waiting for the "authorities" to tell us what happened after the event. History is littered with cases of fence sitters that allowed disasters to occur without questioning why or how. If only the co pilot of the Guruda flight that crashed by landing too fast had spoken out before hand is one recent case in point.
How would it be if your local mechanic on hearing funny noises coming from your steering box just said nothing, or an electrician on smelling a strange smell from the airconditioning duct elected to wait and see if the fire brigade could tell the cause after the fire!
The very reason the flight safety mag is produced is to encourage discussion so all may learn from the accident and hopefully not repeat it.
I have no room at my workplace for anyone to work with or for me that does not make decisions or speak out or question anything to do with safety.
Now while this particular case may have had no chance to question prior to the event to now say we should not speculate or enquire as to the cause......come on.
The aim of the game is not to let the holes in the swiss cheese line up.

I departed bathurst as this aircraft was arriving and the weather was fine with a light northerly wind and overcast at approx 9000'. However there were some light showers to the west of the field.

Just my observations'

Looks like we dont need the authorities to investigate - mostlytossas knows all about the prang

Methinks a re-read of this is in order -

As these are anonymous forums the origins of the contributions may be opposite to what may be apparent. In fact the press may use it, or the unscrupulous, or sciolists*, to elicit certain reactions.

Not an Angel Flight mission

I understand that the crash was not an Angel Flight. Although registered with Angel Flight the pilot was inactive and had not flown a mission at all this year.

Sad thoughts to all those left behind. A real tragedy.

Terrible, terrible!

Policewoman, son killed in Bathurst plane crash - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Detective Superintendent Mick Goodwin says the twin-engine Piper Navajo crashed shortly after taking off at around 8.30pm AEDT and appeared to be trying to return to the airport.

Superintendent Goodwin says there was a radio transmission before the crash and the site can only be described as carnage.

Peter Gibson from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) says the plane hit the ground very hard and exploded on impact.

"There was debris spread over some hundreds of metres around the impact site, plus a post impact fire," he said.
Sounds like some sort of malfunction that rendered the aircraft uncontrollable very quickly, and if it was indeed the owner piloting, even too much for a very experienced IFR driver. So sad!

Anyone overheard said transmission?

I have often admired this beautiful machine, it was parked very close to my own at YMMB.. apparently it was extremely well looked after by the owner and its engineers, incomprehensible how this could have happened, I am sure we'll find out.. saw the owner perform a detailed daily inspection just a few weeks back

Mostlytossas,
I think you may have missed the point on speculation. The reason we DON'T speculate as to the cause of a crash is a safety reason. It is real real easy to form the wrong conclusion when basing ones belief of what happened on what is reported in the media. It is invariably WRONG!!!!! The reason we WAIT and don't speculate is so the authorities can get to the REAL reason for the crash and then put it out to all and sundry so we can then make informed educated deicsions on how to operate more safely. Restricting your own operations or changing procedures based on speculation does nothing for safety at all, in fact it could be argued that it decreases safety.

The examples you gave are irrelevant and do not back up your premis and have nothing to do with post crash investigations.

And as others have stated, the media will grab any soundbite they can and your and others speculation gives them everything they want and does NOTHING for the crash investigation, safety or those left behind.

Cheers
Mr B.

In reply to Under Dog

May I ask what time that was? I was pottering around in the training area in the morning and the weather was very good. But over the rest of the day it steadily got worse. It was a very very dark night too.

Some more details, it seems sadly owner operator Tim O'Brien was indeed the PIC, and his partner also perished RIP fellow aviator!

Family mourns mum, son killed in crash - Yahoo!7 News

Television reports named the pilot as Timothy O'Brien, 51, and the fourth person as his girlfriend Jackie, 40.

Mr O'Brien, of Beaumaris, Melbourne , is a father of three boys, and volunteer pilot for charity Angel Flight which takes sick children from the bush to city hospitals. He owns a heating and air conditioning company.

Detective Superintendent Mick Goodwin said the crash site revealed the plane had tried to return to the airport but went down 3km short of the runway.
