Private - Commercial Conducting commercial operations on a private licence. Often done as a means to get those hours. At least it was in my day.

Speculating on rumour without hard facts is really inappropriate and insensitive to his family.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is a hard fact that the holder of a private licence conducted a commercial flight with a fare paying passenger and that passenger had family, too.

As posted earlier on this thread.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
CAR 262AM defines Limited category ops.

Yes you can fly CPL with no AOC as long as the aircraft has the approporiate CofA issued by the Warbirds Assoc. The limits to ops are listed in the CAR and include things like ops only returning to the same aerodrome, placards say "not CASA", "Own risk", etc. displayed all over the place, and no advertising as Joy or Scenic flights, and or course, only approporiately endorsed CPL pilots.

CAR 262AM includes the following:

(7) A person may carry passengers in a limited category aircraft in circumstances where payment is made for carriage, and subregulation 2 (7A) does not apply, only if:
(a) the pilot in command holds a commercial pilot licence, or an air transport pilot licence, with appropriate ratings and endorsements for a flight of that kind; and

Let it go mate. A lot of people are aware of his past and those who don't, don't need to know. Focus on the good things in life!

I keep thinking of the song off the Chasers War on Everything for some reason.

I might have done all my GA flying in Vic and been O/S for nearly 18 years but I still know who he was and what he got up to.

So let me get this right, you can act absolutely unlawfully and go out and kill some innocent person because you are some kind of folk hero in aviation

Unbelievable that people could be so quaintly isolated from reality that this sort of behaviour could be condoned before or after death.

It is inexcusable to take someone elses life in a reckless moment of unlawful behaviour no matter who you are or who the surviving family might be.

People tried to stop the unlawful beviour whist he was alive to no avail, unfortunately the accident/Incident draws a finite line under his life and now it is all under examination.

Is it easier to say now, I don't think so, an innocent person went with him, it was not that persons choice, he became part of the sad outcome without having any say in the proceedings.

W4 - Whatever dark truths you knew about Mr Hempel, now is the time to let it go and move on mate. It's not even relevant to this tragic accident.

Now I've never had anything to do with the Mr Hempel or the school, and I have no idea if what you say is true, but I personally don't care, and I doubt anyone else here does. Even if it were true, it's not your or anyone else's business broadcasting it to the world here. I don't believe personal comments like that are appropriate on these forums, especially in these circumstances (which is why I believe it was deleted) so let's all keep it on topic and relevant to aviation, a passion we all share and which brings us here in the first place.

Someone a lot wiser than me said to never speak ill of the dead - probably for good reason.

Nothing good is going to come to Barrys' and his pax family from digging up the past, so at the very least, I'm asking you to let Barry's kids remember him for who he was to them - their loving Dad who they'll never see again.

As a Dad myself, to think what his kids and family, along with his passengers family will now have to go through, brings a tear to my eye. Whatever the cause and who/what was the fault, the ATSB now have a job to do, and we can all read the relevant facts in the report when it's done.

In the meantime, just let the family & friends involved get through the terrible aftermath with all the support that we can offer, and end this thread here.

Good onya mate.

I thought the guy was grounded long ago, so what changed?? I know of others (one an ex employee) who is medically fit and can't get her medical back because she and others 146 drivers stuck it up CASA for doing NOTHING! Revenge seems to be SOP in Canberra.....still to this day!

Is this also a case of CASA doing nothing......

I wonder what the penalty is for those who knew things but did nothing? I wonder if there is a lot of ar$e covering going on right now?

Digging up the past may well save some other unsuspecting passenger from losing their life. Shining a light on illegal practices (if they occured) that cause tragedies like this is extemely important. If there are other operators out there behaving in this fashion then perhaps airing all the dirty laundry in this case may encourage people in the know to come forward and do something about it.

If we dont learn from our mistakes we are doomed to repeat them.

God forbid it should happen again because no one wanted to criticise a 'Legend".

Stupid people have an annoying habit of reducing the complex to the simple so their tiny minds can comprehend whats going on.

Sod off.
