Pilot brand ANR head set

Hello all.
I'm looking at purchacing my first ANR headset but I don't want to spend millions.
I have been looking at the Pilot PA18-50 ANR Headset.
I know people will say you pay for what you get, but looking at the specs of most of the ANR sets available, this one seems just as good if not better than the leading brands (the expensive ones).
PNR is 23db
ANR lessens by another 16-18db
Weighs less than 400g
Has a cell/ipod interface.

My question is has anyone used this set before or currently, how do they really compare with the more expensive ones and how would you rate this set overall.

Thanks in advance

Knox.

Best advice is to try before you buy. Most reputable pilot shops will allow you to "test drive" before you spend the $$$...if they don't then take your $$$ somewhere else!

I've heard so many stories about which are better, but in the end much comes down to personal preference and comfort...you won't find that out from someone else's opinion.

My first headset was a Pilot brand one that many rubbished....it cost less than half of the comparible DC, but 20 odd years later it is still working and is a good spare or pax headset.

I tried them a while ago on a 6 hour survey flight in a noisey 337, and whilst the ANR worked just as well as any bose/DC...after 3 hours my head felt like it was in the jaws of a vice slowly tightening.

Like old mate says tho, givem a go cos...maybe i've an odd shaped heed! And for the money they could be a good buy if they fit you...shame i couldn't have just whipped the magic box off them and plugged it into my trusty old PNR DC's!

ANR sans batteries

I love my SoftComm C300. I've tried the Bose and X11s that my boss owns and whilst they are slightly more comfortable they don't stand up to much abuse and they require batteries to run the ANR (as opposed to the Softcomm C300 which uses juice from the microphone)

There was a good thread on this back in early May. Click here.

Just purchased DC H10-13X ENC over the internet at Sporty's in the USA
for $593.95 US. That included International Delivery to Darwin. They work well.

I have the older version of the one you are talking about I think, the Pilot 17-79. Good with the noise cancellation on, and as you say better than most for sure. Down side is when the battery runs out while you are flying, its not very good as a 'normal' headset! o well...

DeltaT. Thanks for the info. Thought they'd work just as well as the others.

One thing about specs. They are not a reliable indicator of performance, you kind of have to try and see which glove fits. ANR can also do funny things with sound, so if you listen to music while you fly you may not like it.
