Tasair Chief Pilot
I have noticed on the AFAP site that Tasair are advertising for a Chief Pilot.
Nothing unusual in that these days except the advert makes no mention of the Jetstream 31 that I thought they were operating on their RPT routes. It refers to their low-capacity RPT activities and that they would like PA31 experience which is what they operated between Devonport, Wynyard and King Island. It also refers to their C441 but not a word about the J31.
What's happened there? Do they still have the J31? Is it operated by another operator for them? Has it gone? I recently saw a very expensive advert for the aircraft in Tasair colours so presumably they did put it into service.
And for the genetically challenged, I don't want to ring them.

Sounds like your the man for the job PLovett.
The Conquest VH-TAZ is leased out and was parked on the ramp in Perth.
The J31 is ex Maroomba, bet the boys from Maroomba still cry in their beer when their boss told them that he had sold the beloved Jetstream!!!

Me! Take on responsibility of a CP! Get a grip man.
Still would like to know what the story with the J31 is though. When I heard they were getting one there was a big flurry of activity and recruiting for their low-capacity RPT (at that stage PA-31s) and I did apply but was told they had a large number of applicants and no thanks.
But, there is not a word of it in the advert and if the J31 was on the AOC I would have thought the CP would need to be qualified. Hence my suspicion that if it is being operated ostensibly by Tasair then it might be on another company's AOC.

So does anybody down south know the answer to the original question. Do Tasair still operate the J31, and C441 for that matter, or are they now only operating a piston fleet?
The Conquest is leased out to an operator in WA.
If John has retired perhaps he can write a few more articles for Australian Flying. Wouldn't me to many men left in the GA business with his experience or exposure from instructing at ppl level thru to IFR and multi-engine, taking the bush-walkers into the south west, IFR charter, photographing the Sydney-Hobart yachts etc.
Last time I was talking he was flying the Conquest, but the next day he was off to Cox's Bight in the trusty old VH-TSR with a load of bush-walkers.

Sign of the times, I also noticed George's old sparing partner over the road looking for a "Senior Pilot" to be based at Launy. On another subjet, I just saw on the news a Titan at Cambridge that landed with a gear problem, looked like it had a problem with the right MLG, it was lying on it's right wing on the runway.

I saw the Titan there yesterday and it didn't look to good.
From what I saw it was indeed the right main gear that collapsed.
I believe that it had just returned on a delivery flight after maintenance work in W.A.

John retired a few years ago now (2002 0r 3 from imperfect memory) but retained his ATO approvals and was doing casual work for Tasair, I think.
Apart from the list of achievments you mentioned it would be very rare for someone to have done all that he has done in the one company. All his flying has been with Tasair (and the Aero Club of Southern Tasmania when that was affiliated with Tasair). A truely remarkable record.
He was replaced by another ex-Tasair student, John Townley I think and it looked as though he would be yet another to spend his whole career with Tasair but Jet* snaffled him a couple of years ago.

Shame to see John Pugh retire, but hope he has long enjoyable retirement and still does a bit of flying on the side. He is only the third CFI that the Aero Club of Southern Tasmania, in well over fifty years of continous operations. Must be some kind of record for any aviation company.
I reckon you must be the man for the job PLovett!!!
Do they still operate TSR?

When I last spoke to John he was looking forward to his retirement so that he could devote more time to other activities that had taken a distant second place to aviation. In his last year as Tasair CP he had vacated the CFI role as the RPT side of the business was taking more and more of his time.
He is a much respected figure in Tassie aviation circles who has helped many people on their path to an airline career.
Given the state of the market if you had regional airline experience with CFI and chief pilot experience under your belt you should be asking for $100 000+ There would not be much competition these days.
I'd hazard a guess that CASA would want metro or J31 experience at a bare minimum.

Does anyone know sort of salary range would be appropriate for a position such as this?
Must have been around '88. JP and new endorsee in the Shrike EXC. Parked at bowser outside the old Bellman at CBG. Just got both going and trainee is head down busy busy. The rudder cleat is still in. So I pulls it out and walks round and leans on bowser holding said object up until JP happens to notice. A faint smile and a gesture of "put it away" while pointing at the open hangar door.
Later the explanation was volunteered "Just to drive home a point about never allowing a distraction during preflights." Aaahhhh.
