A different question (below) but is the answer applicable when assessing pilot candidates? :
Teenage and early adult years are a tough time and we often do things we would prefer to forget. Tattoos make that difficult. It would be a shame if a tatt disqualified someone from achieving their dream. I think tattoos should be illegal under age 25 after which impulsivity tends to wane.

"Are tattooing and body piercing indicators of risk-taking behaviours among high school students?"
"Factors that contribute significantly to the likelihood of teenagers being tattooed or pierced, for both genders, are associated with “externalized risk behaviours” such as multiple drug use, illegal activities, gang affiliation, problem gambling, school truancy and rave attendance."

Personally, I think if you want to be a pilot say no to a tattoo. You are suppose to be a professional, marking youself with silly pictures does not exhibit this quality.
People with tattoo's mainly have something to prove buy showing off a particular mark.

AviatoR21,
You must be joking.........
How does getting a tattoo make you less professional?? I have a couple of tattoo's...does that make me unprofessional does it?? Maybe someone should have told my employer before they gave me a job. A good mate of mine is a doctor.....and guess what....he has a tattoo. Oh no...........
I am really shocked at some of the narrow minded views on this topic.

Tempo
I know a large plastic company MD who has one, he had the current one done to cover up the previous one that he felt was not appropriate.
Its hard to cover up a mistake.....and with a tattoo its even harder!
That was his opinion on his earlier "mistake". But it seemed like a good idea at the time!

Hmmm. So Tatts are unprofessional and a sign of risk-taking according to some experts here?
Bollocks.
There is nothing in our FAM excluding anyone with tatts providing they can be concealed from view (dress standards).
I know a couple of senior blokes at QF with tatts. Doesn't prevent them from holding their positions, and I'm sure has no effect on their ability to safely operate an aeroplane. They ride motorcycles too, so does that make them outlaw bikers? Give me a break!
Personally, I find tatts distasteful. However I respect an individual's choice and don't pass judgement (unlike some contributors here).
As a recruiter, I couldn't care less if somebody turns up for a sim ride with a tatt, providing it can be covered in accordance with dress standards (if it is not for cultural reasons).
I'm more interested in the fact that he or she is good at poling the plane around and is trainable....

Hi guys,, Holloway 182 to answer your question. I use to work for Qantas in their First class Cabin and for Emirates. and I have a tatoo on my shoulder, Qantas never asked any questions regarding tatoo's, Emirates took a note of it and that was it. Knew plenty of crew with tatoo's on their body, as long as its covered the company does not care.
Hope that was what your after,

Why would a pilot/crew be negatively assessed if he/she has a tattoo?
1. if a visible tattoo is a problem but a hidden one not then this is just pandering to public prejudice and not reasonable.
or
2. if tattooed pilots are over-represented in aviation accidents ie tatts a predictor of risk taking behaviour
We need a study!

This topic is getting dangerous. Some head office suit is going to come across this and the few grey cells between his ears are going to grind out a new policy.... All Aircrew must have the appropriate logo emblazoned on forehead or right cheek. Colour of the tattoo will be stipulated as well.
There are some very long airline names out there..... Yup, I'm looking forward to having Saskatchewan Frontier Airways tattooed on my face.

I bet many of the people who who find tatts distateful and are against 'mutilating' their body blah blah would have no problem with the hosties in the back who have been somewhat 'enhanced'...( o )( o )

Got a tat on that arm there out the window??
Still feel it's way too like cattle branding.............but I'm sure you'll be happy to accept my perception as much as I accept your right to tatoo yourselves

Smoking is also unprofessional as we are supposed to be healthy.
While I'm on healthy, you should not be over weight, as this displays to the fare paying public that you are not interested in your health and therefore unprofessional.
I think people with strong religious beliefs should also be banned from holding a pilots licence, in an emergency there is a chance they could turn to god for help instead of the QRH.
Actually, pilots should be 183cms, weigh 86kgs, and have blonde hair ( of German descent optional but preferable.
Good Grief, GET A LIFE

Oldies sporting the faded tatts of their youth do look a bit silly, it's true, but if you want one and you're proud of it, good on you, I say.
