tech quiz- Abbreviations RAIM etc, Weight and balance. Bring a calculator even though they say your not allowed to use one. Bring it! Critical POint calculation. 3-4 pages in length 20 questions or so. you'll need 45 mins to complete it.
What's the point of bringing a calculator if your not allowed to use it? You didn't cheat did you?

tmahon.
  • Learn to fly
  • Get your CPL
  • Get your Multi-IFR
  • Get 10 hours on type of the most used G/A twins, either pay for it yourself or look around for some sort of ICUS scheme.
  • Do the rounds and sell yourself.
If you survive the process, (financially as well as personally) and once you have the mins, apply to them all (airlines). Believe me there are very few shortcuts mate.

Forget the cadetship, as they only want the young and gullible. That is one very expensive shortcut that may be heading for a dead end!

Good luck. (sincerely)

Absolutely tmahon.

Only it took me 9 years in GA before my first airline gig. With the situation today, you should be able to do it in much less time. Be under no illusion however, there are no garentees and there will be sacrifices.

Fell free to PM me if you want more.

Krusty.

Hi again Krusty

Krusty,

Once again thank you, it is invaluable to chat and receive help from someone like you.
I am new to this site, infact today is my first day, so I am still getting used to it.
When you say PM do you mean phone you, as I would like to run my plans past you if ok, how do I get in contact.

Thanks again,

tmahon

Half-Pint,

I'm American and applied to REX several months ago after seeing an advertisement in an American Mag called Professional Pilot. I was invited to interview with them in Melbourne at my own expense with Rex providing the Hotel. With what I'm reading here and the pay scale they showed me, I'm very hesitant.

FR8DOG44.....

do a bit more homework too.... in Oz, we have slightly higher tax rates too.
check out Australian Taxation Office Homepage
also check out Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au

this will tell you how much tax you will have to pay, plus maybe give an indication of house prices here.

good luck

Foreign Pilots

Half-Pint,

Rex will hire foreign pilots, they have approval under Aussie immigration to use a visa called a 457 which allows for fast tracking of applications and employment here, which can lead to permanent residency (if that's what you are after!)

Apache,

I've been to OZ 5 times now, although always to SYD. Real Estate prices put me in a state of shock! I don't how folks in SYD do it! I am also familiar with Aussie tax rates. In some cases it's less than the US but you guys do pay pay more for consumer goods as thats where your Gov hits you really hard! What REX pays is what's causing hesitation. One might have to hole up in a cardboard box in a park somewhere to work for them. My only other reason for doing it is because I really do love Australia and it's a great place to live, and, as you know, the States are falling apart!

mate, If you have a decent jobn at the moment, and can afford to sit out this situation with the economies etc, then that is what i would advise at the moment. Aus isn't holding up unscathed either at the moment.... and may only get worse with China feeling a pinch too...
