Now, I don't have a crystal ball, but I find it difficult to beleive there will be no casual recruitment at all. Last October, I was informed there was no scheduled intakes at all for this year, and we have had a number of classes coming through.
2007 will see many VR's as well as a natural attrition from the casual ranks. It's my understanding they have no planned starts for the remainder of the financial year. Beyond that is anyones guess.

No more mam casuals
Maybe Qantas has realised that MAM has actually been lowering the standard of crew they have hired and is making the national carrier of australia look tacky, thats y they have stopped for a while. I have seen a few batches of MAMers and to be honest it looks like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel. more like a macdonalds recruitment if you ask me. dont get me wrong, there is great quality out there, i just think that MAM have this vision of recruiting crew to the lowest standard that QF guidelines give them and making all this money for it. I say bring back actual QF recruitment, although we know that this will never happen!!

Thats not a fair comment for you to say. Think about the conditions MAM are offering for employment compared to EBA's other carriers offer. That should help you understand why your getting the "bottom of the barrel".

career progression
This has probably been asked before but is there career progression from MAM to QF SH????? Also are the bases only mel syd and bne?
Last edited by Trollywally; 22nd Apr 2007 at 01:37. Reason: addition
Trollywally - The bases for SH are bne, syd, mel, per. The progression - well with them offering VR to the fulltimers, I dont see them offering more positions for full time. Stranger things have happened - just don't count on it.
Ozziecrew - it's people like you who make broad sweeping statements like what you've just said, that 'can' make a Qantas plane one of the most miserable places to work. Grow up - sure there's some MAM FAs who are pretty shocking, but wake up and smell the roses, theres some shocking full timers too. No more or less prevalent than the MAMers. Whats more with a negative attitude like that - im not surprised you dont like them - because they probably dont like you!
For the record, late on christmas eve, we left singapore for perth, and in charge of the A330 galley was a MAM girl who'd never flown on an airbus, and was 1 week out of training. MAM was her first flying job. She ran that galley better than I have seen any other MAMer, or Fulltimer - without any help. She was also brilliant with the passengers.

I found those comments made by Ozziecrew highly insulting. I totally agree with ozangel. If you don't know your facts you shouldn't comment re: recruiting done solely by MAM..its actually QF doing the interviewing and deciding on which applicants go thru!!

" Maybe they're putting the MAM recruitment on hold because they are expecting an influx of AO crew! " -flitegirl response #25
not sure if i understand where you are coming from - are you trying to get into the industry & frustrated by that fact that positions may be taken by AO or are you already in the industry????

ok, I will try to make it a little clearer. I am theorising that perhaps recruitment for MAM is being stalled because they are intending to redeploy AO crew into S/H bases
And no, I am not frustrated. I have been in the industry for 8 years. I would expect no one would be frustrated if AO crew were given positions in Qantas ahead of external applicants. After all, AO crew are already full time QF group employees.

thanks for the clarification - its greatly appreciated as are your comments - i only ask because sometime 'icons' can be misinterupted - in fact i was giving you the benefit of the doubt. I fully agree, I feel sad that this base has been, and continues to be, under such constant & destructive pressure - they are a credit to our industry

Has anyone seen the Labour IR work laws? I think its aimed at QF? They're in a board room having a meeting about staff. And they're cutting down costs on staff, lowering wages, cutting of public holiday pay etc (very similar as to what Qantas is doing). And then there is only 1 guy who objects and everyone shuts him down saying its the law. Then the head boss goes 'Right, case closed. Next on the agenda...Executive bonuses'..
Does that sound a lot like QF to anyone else?

Casual intake
Guys dont give up lets just say that they have plans to take in at least 400 to 600 casual next year in 2008. They have applicants for intake from july as a back up. There are ppl who are out there who are waiting for ground skool.
So casual are still here and theres more to come.

All the answers
Hi guys, just thought I'd clarify as much informatin that has been posted here regarding MAM recruitment and Brisbane...
I recently attended a MAM recruitment day in Brisbane (held on 16/4/07) so fairly recent. There were two recruitment days held (one on 16/4 & 17/4). There were 36 people exactly at both days. You are shortlisted to attend these days (so people who don't have the required documents usually aren't invited). There are limited positions to each of the days and the bookings manager openned at 8am the following day upon receiving the initial invite to the recruirment day. From what I remember, I registered @ 8am the following morning and obviously got the 'invite' however I did check back later that morning around 10:30 and it said that there were not more positions... so it does fill up quickly...
For you Brisbanites out there, it was held at Eagle Farm racecourse (no they didn't race us), started at 8.
It started off with document & height checking which took a long time... then we learnt more about the company and then straight off into the group activity which was to solve something (i'm not giving it away, it is used in the same MAM days in the other cities). It was then breaktime where morning tea was provided. Then we filled out application forms and personality tests. Finally it was onto the individual role play... where you are in a room with a QANTAS f/a (in uniform) and a MAM assesser who monitors you... then its lunch time... you receive a text message if you're successful or not (if successful there's an interview time) if not it just says thanks but no thanks...
I was not successful... about 10 were successful.. those 10 I NOTE did not fit the mould that I had in my head (ie: perfect grooming, manners, clean skin, physically healthy ect). It was interesting that all the people who have been f/a's before did not get it either (they were all young 20 somethings, had imaculate hair+makeup+clothes, great personalities very likeable and worked for great airlines like Emirates, Virgin Blue, British Airways ect ect). So the 9 or so people that were accepted to the behavioural interview were not what you'd expect, two didn't have combed hair with ill fitted suits and srsly bad acne, fatties... it was as if the people who shouldn've got through did... my opinion anyway.
Also, in the MAM communication email it did say they are recruing in Brisbane again in August and December...
I also must MENTION that you are employed by MAM not QANTAS which means:
- no staff travel
- no access to staff credit union
- no possible promotion
- casual only (no paid leave, sick leave, annual leave, parental/maternal leave)
- pay is $27/hr + overnights, more if you speak of the Asian persuasion
QANTAS contracts f/a's from MAM as a cost cutting strategy, which is understandable considering the company's debt is 90% of the actual value.
Also Lisa Robertson (ex QANTAS f/a, aka slept with Ralph Feinnes was a MAM'er)
Hope this answers all your questions/queries/concerns... feel free to ask me any other questions regarding the recruitment day about the group interview & behavioural interview.

I'm not a MAM employee, however I think It's really poor form to make a "Lisa Robertson" comment like that in your post. You have dragged down the thread and along with comments like "fatties" I think you are insulting to Qantas MAM flight attendants.
