That time of the year again, thanks G.A. Boy, I tried to book with Dr. McMahon, his cost is $99 but unfortunately he is no longer taking new patients.

Still on the look out for anyone who doesnt charge the earth.

Any further ideas anyone?

Dr Tunbridge recently retired. End of an era, I thought he was great and enjoyed catching up. Massive loss of aviation medical expertise.

Looks like his DAME work has been taken over by Dr Sam Birman at Hotel Medical in Collins St Melbourne.

Cost $160 + $75 for the CASA fee.

I thought Dr Sam was very good.

I heard that Dr Tunbridge was going to retire at the end of the year anyway, but jumped a bit early because he was frustrated dealing with CASA.

Apparently he only put the stethoscope away a couple of weeks ago.

I'm in the early stages of my PPL and am running through the CASA hoops for my class 1 medical ATM. It's costing a fortune.
CASA Processing & consideration of class 1 medical $75
DAME initial consultation: $187
Ophthalmologist: $330
Audiogram: $95
ECG: $61

Then CASA sent me a letter saying they picked up some abnormalities in my eyes and on the initial ECG. So they sent me off to an Optometrist who couldnt understand what the hell they we're talking about and said I have perfect 20/20 vision. That cost me another $280
Then they sent me off for another more detailed ECG which my DAME said was total rubbish, and guess what...it came back completely normal.

So far it's cost me $1028 to jump through all CASA's hoops.
Has anyone else experienced this with CASA?
It's seems like a conspiracy to me to line each others pockets.
I realise they need to make sure all potential pilots are in good health, but it seems that CASA's aviation medicine department works to a different set of standards to ME's in the real world.

  1. Anyone provide name(s) of good practical DAME and those charging low costs, in Sydney metro area preferably?
  2. Any update on current costs for Class 2 Medical?
  3. Anyone know if the Sydney Aviation Medical Ctr in the city still getting good response rate/short turn around time from CASA?
Appreciate all answers. Via PM Ok.

Would certainly like to avoid the excess check roundabout and additional costs incurred by sneakypete.

Sneaky it is the norm for CASA just accept the fact the CASA medico's are not practicing professionals, they are paper pushing public servants of somewhat limited expertise in general, so you can expect the run around.

Local doc here $250 + + + but at least he has ECG and Audiogram on site, so only need to do bloods a week before, and all is good! a trip to the big smoke would cost more than that just for petrol and parking!

Once you are over 50 it's not so much what it costs, it's that stamp and re validation that is sweet. I have my once a year heart clogging feed of KFC on the way home from medical, than back on the cruciferous veggies and 'lean' meats. WTF is the point of roast chook with NO SKIN??? that's the best bit FFS!

CASA fee for ...for ...for exactly what? other than 2 minutes of paper shuffling vetting the Doc's forms, a single printed sheet and a postage paid envelope! i wish i was on the same hourly rate as that!....empire building parasites... i hope they all have heart attacks,... ,or at least fail an AOD test...( a test where a fail is a POSITIVE result)

Are there any DAMES in Melbourne that do ECG? Trying to organise one with Monash or any other hospital is a nightmare, also CASA didnt tell me that I needed one for my class 2 untill a month after they had my form. Have two weeks left on my DAME revalidation sheet and a 4 month wait for an ECG

ECG

Unless you need something special, you can get an ECG done at a range of Melbourne Pathology centres. All you need is a referall from your DAME, which can be arranged beforehand.

I need one every year due to my age, and Dr Tunbridge sends me across the road to the Melbourne Pathology in Collins st to get it done before my medical.

Peterc005 I don't know where you get your information from, but Dr Tunbridge did my medical last month.

DIVOSH!

Plugs, my advice would be to ring in a week's time to make sure AVMED have everything they need.

They will take your money straight up, but nothing gets done until all the paper work arrives.

If something is missing, they don't ring and tell you.

I got mine done back in June in Sydney, out in Windsor (we were based at Richmond).

I was charged $251, that included ECG and audiogram, and he completed the whole thing online while I was with him.

If you can put up with the drive, I would highly recommend him. Dr Grahame Hadfield

I recently renewed my CASA class 1 medical at Kinetic Health in Laverton North. They have all the equipment and facilities to do all the testing onsite and this includes the ECG, blood and urine, and audiogram. Filling in the medical form was all done online and as soon as the doc pressed the submit button, CASA Avmed had my application in their database. This was done on a Thursday and by the following Monday I had a call from the doc saying that I needed to do a stress ECG. Since I work overseas, CASA actually allowed me to do this in the country where I work. I sent them the results of the stress ECG which they accepted and I now have my CASA class 1 medical current.

Liasing with CASA Avmed officers was actually not as painful as I first thought. They were quite nice to deal with on the phone as well as through the email which they replied quite promptly.

Anyway, here's the address of Kinetic Health in Laverton. The medical costs around $250 if I remember correctly plus an additional $80 or so for the ECG.

spoke to the AVMED section the other day because of a delay in the issue of my medical.I was advised that they have 28 days from the last received correspondence to issue the medical. So if they have issues with your paperwork, once all has been complied with they can take their 28 days.So in theory it's possible to exceed the 2 month DAME extension before the new medical is issued.

Strictly speaking , its illegal for a DAME to bulk bill Medicare for a CASA medical. Mind you its a good medical examination of someone who needs to be fit for the community's sake, so I dont see why it shouldn't attract public funding. Most of the doctors do it for the love of it at a rate much lower than their usual practice billing rate, often for fellow pilots.

The costs are a function of the practice costs overall, plus the time it takes to get all the paperwork rounded up - there is a fair amount of work behind the scenes at times. So if you dont like the costs, then look around at the practice overheads ,red tape, salaries, insurance and all the other things that make doing business tough in Australia that legislators dont care two hoots about these days ....

A good quality medical practice will nearly always have ecg, audiometry on site.
