Medical Cost
I'm in need of renewing my class 1 medical, and rang 2 local DAME's to enquire cost. Was gobsmacked to be told $230 (Mitcham) & $250 (Kilsyth) respectively (and this didnt include the new $130 fee from CASA).
My last medical was in Adelaide and was $105. I'm now living in Melbourne and am trying to locate a DAME at a reasonable cost.
Can anyone point me in right direction? Even just knowing the suburb would be handy!!!

I did mine in Berwick not long back, I can't remeber the exact price but I am thinking it as around half of what you were quoted. (Look under vic country on the casa site)
The guy in Eltham used to be alot cheaper than that too, though I haven't been there for over 12 months

$130ish for a DAME for the class 1 renewal (and I am already on his books having done 4 or 5 there over the years, don't know if that makes a difference) is what I paid in South Melbourne about two months ago (Dr Davies). Then double it for CASA to process it
Some quacks refuse to accept this fee, instead you have to send it off yourself.

I paid $275 (not incl. CASA fee) for my last class 1 medical renewal in Sydney city - I got a rude shock as I wasn't expecting to pay that. Most of my friends are paying about half that in the suburbs so try the suburban Doctors around Adelaide.
$150 plus is WAY too much for a medical that normally takes 20mins!
And leave just one box unticked, it all gets sent back!!
Just paid $209 for a medical (incl ECG). Then $130 for CASA!
I'm not complaining about the doc's fee - a lot of people probably don't realise the overheads involved in running a medical practice, it's not as if the $209 goes straight into the guy's pocket. GPs in Australia remain fairly poorly remunerated when compared to other medicos.
However, CASA's fee is nothing but a blatant rip off, and will remain so, even when it goes down to $75 next year!
BTW - does anyone know of a DAME in Sydney with the facilities to do an ECG and audiogram? (it's so much easier to get everything done at once at the one location).

Guys,
The reason the medical costs are so high is that the doctor who becomes a DAME has to pay out of his own pocket for the course and examinations to become a qualified DAME.
The DAME course costs approximately $15K. So to actually get any of that money back, most doctors charge a motsa for the medical examinations. They probably are lucky to do more than about 2 a week (if that). Plus they have to stay current, which also costs money.
If you're in Brissie, Dr. Chaffey (Camp Hill Medical Centre) charges about $150 for a medical.

i paid mine in Glenside, SA $220.00 for the Doc, another $44 for the ECG etc, $80 for eye sight, and then ofcourse, the CASA chaps another $130. what a way to kill your savings! This is coming from a Private pilot whos going commercial in few months. I guess our woes have fallen into deaf ears!
Well done CASA. You've done it again!

My DAME back in ####### charged me ~$130.
When he stamped my medical, he revalidated it for a year (instead of two months) for the third year in a row. Atleast this year it saved me the $100+ CASA processing fee, because I am damned sure I aint payin' it now!
If he keeps it up I'll only have to put money into the CASA social club fund every second year
BTW my operator accepts the medical as is (and why shouldn't they hahaha)
Troopie 1, CASA 0

Geez Troopie, I hope this is a wind-up.....
Regardless of the error made by your DAME, the onus is on YOU to do the right thing. Your employer should know better!
Very soon, the scoreline may read: CASA 1, Troopie -5.
Pay the money and get your arse covered...

My DAME has just increased his charge from $60 last year, to $99 last month. Then CASA lost my fee payment, then double charged, so maybe he's not too bad a deal after all
