jetstar endorsement money

Hello, does any body know first hand if jetstar/jetstar international want their jet endorsement money upfront or do they take it out your wage over a couple of years.

Heard its now upfront since someone failed their 2nd comapny sim ride and had his employment offer rescinded and skipped out on repaying endorsement. Was to be salary sacrificed after he was checked to line. But no job no pay for endorsement.

Someone maybe able to shed some accurate light on this. I have heard some conflicting info about if you can claim the cost of the endorsement on tax if you pay before you start versus after.

Does anyone have any facts about this and the ATO.

Additionally, is there any other way of trying to recoup your cost (or some of it) either before, during or after you get then gig,

Tax law is pretty simple. Pay to get the job, no tax deductibility. Pay to maintain/enhance earning capacity, tax deductible.

Pay after is therefore the best optionif you are unemployed beforehand.

HOWEVER, if you earn a living as a pilot and the endorsement lets you earn more, deductible. Doesn't really matter.

Not true, you must be paying for something that increases your earning capacity with your current employer. So, pay after.

Does anyone here know if Jetstar will take me on as a F/O?

Got 500+ hours on the A319, 320 & 321 as F/O and more than 4600 hours total time...

...but haven't got the "1000 hours Pilot in Command (excluding ICUS)" they ask for. How important is that and will they waive it for anyone with experience and rated on type?

Have got some 4200+ EFIS hours in Regional and Airline operations overseas, and the rest of their requirements in place.

Not true. YYWG is correct in that costs of either maintaining your current position or enhancing it are both equally deductible. The critical point is that you must be already employed in that line of work to be able to claim. ie you cannot do so before you commence with you employer.

Lookindown, from the ATO website on eligibility to claim self education expenses (my bolding):

You can only claim deductions for the expenses associated with self-education that are related to your income earning activities while you are studying. If your self-education was to help you get a new job, you cannot claim your expenses.

If it is for a new job, you can't claim. As far as I can tell, and it's not very specific, it doesn't matter that your new job is in the same profession as your old one, it is still a new job.

If you feel like claiming anyway, and they don't audit you, well, that's up to you .

That's my understanding. If they employ you, then you have to pay for an endorsement to maintain that job - OK.
If you pay for an endorsement then they offer you a position as a result - no go.
Either way, it's a pity Jetstar won't salary sacrifice any more, as you need a reasonable income to claim a $34,000 deduction.

That would depend on the details of the job offer I suspect. Do they say "you have a job on the condition that you get an endorsement", or do they say, "You have a job, go get an endorsement."?

At what stage do you sign the employment contract?

Has this been tested by anyone yet? By that, I mean, has anyone claimed, been audited by the ATO, and had it found as a legitimate claim?

I spoke to the ATO and they basicaly told me that I couldn't claim if I paid before.

I understand that you have to pay at least the deposit before you start, as with the 2k recruiting fee. However if they charge the remainder after you start with then I suppose we can claim that.

If anyone has recent experience with this that would be great.

I know that some people get different advice from accountants etc that may not always be right, depends on interpretation, state etc.

No mate, not flown in Oz for a while now... but would be nice to be able to get back there if I do get a job that'd keep me flying the 320 I'm flying now.

I know it won't be easy straight up. But situations change all the time, so it's always worth keeping an eye out for what's going on, eh? Only problem is that whenever one does... some get crabby, others are helpful.
