Big trouble in little China......?

Like many young cpl guys I am trying to get work as a junior instructor. I have tried to find out about CSWAFC and have been encouraged to put a resume in. From what I have heard the place is going downhill......can anyone confirm this? Should I still bother applying if this is the case? From what I have heard it is a great company....or should I now talk in the past tense? Love to know what the story is
....

Nothing like the truth to ruin a juicy rumour. My advice: Send a resume, get an interview, an you interview them as well, then see what you think. I would not trust a pilot rumour for the weight of the spoken word!! Look it up for yourself, an advice long time given to me and it works.

Good luck

Citationdriver,

With a cadet intake of over 300 next year and the following number of years this company is not going downhill.

CSWAFC cannot get enough qualified instructors 2 meet the demand.

Ops manager and CFI have made great inroads to improve the working enviroment.

If you are prepared to fly alot of hours with cadets that find english as a language sometimes hard this company will c u well.

You will find 12 months in the wheatbelt the stumbling block but if your not from metro wa this wont be a problem.

Send that cv sell youself and your career may well be on its way.

Watch out for Jabba the hut.... she's a big girl and is very reluctant to give the boys a lift back to the port. Merredin had 22 instructors late september, of that 22 there are around 10 left. Tough to work out there but there are ways to keep yourself busy. The blokes you work with u become great mates with and you'll have a great time with them. look out for the farmers daughters though... they're either keen to have kids or they think that you're their ticket out of there. some great stories. tower shifts get very boring at times but there is some great ways to keep yourself occupied! (check under the radio)

I wonder what all of the charter pilots working in and around places that are trully remote (like Borroloola, Burketown, Hooker Creek, Wyndham, Kunna's, Gove etc etc) for a couple of years will think of that comment.....

Should be funny.

Citationdriver, any work you can get at the lower end of the food chain that gets you up the ladder faster is a good thing, full stop. My advice.... try it, if you don't like the place you can always leave. Have heard they want instructors of all grades at the moment.

Regards,
OpsN.

Citationdriver,

If you don't have a job at the moment, go for it. The fact they are advertising is an indication they are desperate for people. I have a friend who has just left and he used the place as you probably should, get your hours up and move on. The pay is, as far as I am aware, easily the best paying instructor job in the country. You will do plenty of flying and other work for your money however, which is only fair. If you possibly have any desire to work in Asia later in your career training Chinese in a cross cultural cockpit will only stand you in good stead. On the downside you will not get any multi as the company is top heavy unless things change a lot or you are prepared to hang around a long time. Merriden most definately should not be seen as a downside, if you can not live there then...maybe the QF cadetship should be the way for you to go as GA isn't.

Many Thanks

Thankyou for everyone for your advice. I have posted a cv and will see what happens. I still have reservations if that many people are leaving....unless they found something better. Sounds like an interesting place to work all the same! Cheers!!

citationdriver,

Give it a go, it cannot hurt.

You are only seeing one side of the story in these posts, the school has basically doubled the number of students per year (160-300), over the last couple of years and they have rearranged the way training is done, more training is done in Jandakot. Some instructors were relocated from Merredin to Jandakot due to the rearrangement of the training program.

The drive for rearrangement of the training program mainly due to CASA/ASL requirements for CPL exams. It became a logistical nightmare to transfer students between the campuses as the closest ASL testing centre is in Perth.

The company relies on a seniority system for staff promotion, so only the guys who have been in the company the longest, and have the required qualifications get promoted onto the twin IFR teaching. Do not go in with an expectation to be teaching twin IFR with 12 months, you will only be kidding yourself, become disillusioned, and want to leave.

There is little chance of getting any advancement onto the jets in the school, however two of the instructors have gone from being piston instructors at the college to flying business jets. With the recent change in China Southern mainline of allowing expat pilots further opportunities maybe available further down the track. But it would be some time off.

If you have any exposure to the way things are done in Asian countries the way the school is "programmed" to produce pilots would be of little surprise to you. It does surprise most as the guys you training will more than likely be flying a 777 or similar while your still instructing.

Blown seal.
Your advice to"get your hours up and get out of there" is the real cause of many of the problems in the industry. If you are not seriously trying to be useful and constructive in the industry, you should not be there.
