The Corsairs operated from Bougainville. They replaced the P-40 in 1944. Mostly shipping and ground targets (fun) . George Washington told me he nearlly pranged flying wing on a coastal strike. The lead decided to turn inland at the break off and they very nearly didnt make it over hills hills close by (these kids flying the F4U some were 19)

Hi,
Have been enjoying reading through the thread and reliving my childhood. My Dad was Dave Maclure who passed away in 2009 but flew with Macair,Talair and Airnuigini. Dennis Faithful gave my Mum one of his paintings of a flying boat taking off from Rose Bay as she was Cheif Hostie and crewed the boats before marrying Dad. That Bird brings back so many memories!!
Do you know how I can get a copy of Bryan McCook's book/memoir ??
Cheers,
Lisa

Hey Mendi, We don't recall this photo. ( I am Dave's daughter) It was taken just before the end of his second stint in PNG so we were based in Lae. Was he working for TAL then?? or just leaving Macair?. Confused!!

Hi all
Love that photo of the Corsair's. When I saw it I thought of Wewak. I lived there as a child. I remember talking to an ex WW2 pilot who bombed Wewak in a corsair with RNZAF. I dont know where he was based. Loved Wewak. I remember finding all kinds of WW2 junk lying around our property. My sister and I are looking at going back to PNG for a visit at some stage in the near future. We lived on Kreer hights which I was told was used as a POW camp by the Japs. We used to play on a jap search light that I think was pulled out of the bush down the hill from our house.
Regards

Repent and be saved.
Is salvation at hand for all of us who have taken off overloaded or otherwise infringed the sacred writings of the ANO/ANR's?

Could those Corsairs be at Salamaua?

re: Dave Maclure
Hi Macie, I flew as a First Officer with your father on the F27 in 1978 out of Rabaul, towards the end of his time in PNG, and I have many good memories of those times. He was a great guy to work with and showed me lotsa good stuff that have helped me in my career.

Vanimo, what a pleasant little place to be banished to.
Getting mixed up in Yellow Rvers And Green Rivers lots of Telefomin etc and over the border to Sentani, which sounded like it was transmitting from the bottom of a huge tin."Have you got your WISA from Jakaarta? Please the number?" Yeah sure and we would read back one of the HF frequencies on the panel backwards.
One day they twigged and there was a bit of a **** fight but all duly agreed with an increase in deliveries of Penthouse and Playboy magazines to the Polis Commander

In 1973 3 new blokes arrived in POM at the same time to work for Biscuit Ears , as I was already BN2 endorsed guess who was sent to Wewak and which one to Bloody F----g Daru. I still have not forgiven you bastards for being smart enough to pull THAT one off. ,

Foreign chap and missus were running the Daru Hilton them days
The menu was great it featured Daru lobster followed by Daru lobster and ending with Daru lobster.
I too did a stint there filling in with a Baron for Loopy Len.
