It may not be possible to register the Bentleys or Maserati in Australia (or get a Vehicle Import Permit) if the vehicle does not have an Australian ADR plate.

"The importation of a road vehicle (that is nonstandard or does not have an identification plate) without a vehicle import approval is prohibited under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989. It is an offence with a maximum penalty of 120 Penalty Units."

I don't think they want you to do that! Commonwealth Penalty Points are now $210 each, so 120 Penalty Points will cost you $25,200 plus the cost to re-export or destroy the vehicle.

I suspect the details, VIN numbers etc of those vehicles would be well known to the Australian authorities.

Yesterday's "PNG Loop" reported the Maserati's and Bentley's are locked up in an old shed on the wharf.
Reading further on it appears a fine upstanding PNG Citizen has broken into the shed and damaged the vehicles by forcibly removing the fuel caps in preparation for … you know what !
Person was arrested and had numerous forms of identification, mostly different.
It would appear there may be a shed full of damaged Maserati's and Bentley's !

Wouldn’t matter where they stored them, even if they were in a security controlled environment, ol mate would only need to flash a box of white cans and access would be granted....

Guards would be sparked in quick time and wouldn’t notice the vehicles being stolen before their own eyes!

What ever happened to the Blue and White Torana with HB painted on the bonnet?

I’m desperately looking for a car to purchase for business activities in POM, I know there may be a few cheap Maserati’s on sale however the HB Torana was iconic around POM about 20 years ago.

Nissan Sunnys weren't produced after 2006, so your car must have been between 12 years and 46 years old. I never knew cars to last that long in PNG, should have been in a museum!

Around 1963 or 1964 I had a '57 Holden FE sedan in Port Moresby. The Haus Boi, a Goilala often watched me cleaning the car and one day asked me if he could clean it. That should have set the alarm bells off in any Expat, but no, I told him to go ahead.

Using the garden hose, he did a great job removing all the dust from behind the dash board, under the seats and washed the carpets in situ.

Took days of drying out to get it running again. The bench seats had cloth inserts and every time I sat in the car for months I got wet to the skin. Never did get the smell of mould out of the car!

I am in contact with a guy in the UK who manages the Jasper Masklyne web site about Jasper's father who was a magician of some note: https://www.maskelynemagic.com/

He is now seeking to update the web site with details of Jasper's life, particularly his flying years ending at Air Niugini and later years on the Dash 8 with Flight West Airlines.

He asked me to post the following notice:

I corresponded in depth with Alistair (Jasper) Maskelyne when I was researching his father's war time adventures.

I realize too late that I should have found out more about his own career as a technician and pilot. If anyone out there has any specific memories of Alistair (Jasper) and would like to share these anecdotes, please email me at: [email protected]

Thanks

Richard Stokes

The Lae NDB will be switched off on 23rd May 2019....
Soon there will be handful of DME's only.

How does one do the VOR27 approach without the NDB?

And hold at LAE?

I imagine there will be a 'holding' procedure over LARID, the replacement name for the waypoint formerly Lae NDB, one would hope...

PNGDF - PAC 750 aircraft ?

There was talk last year the PNGDF was taking delivery of six PAC 750 aircraft. Has any been delivered to date?
Is the CASA 235 aircraft serviceable and flying?

I know they took delivery of one in June of 2018. Judging from all the ceremony and such, I assume it was the first one. I have no idea if there have been subsequent deliveries.

With all the largesse expended on the Maserati's, PAC are probably having trouble sighting money's in the bank before any more are delivered....

Welll, be honest, which would you rather have? A Maserati, or one of those awkward, bulbous things with the crooked wings.

Actually, speaking of all the Maseratis and other assorted luxury vehicles; Anyone got the latest hard info on what has happened to all of them?

ie How many have found their way into certain Bigmen's garages etc etc:

How many have been written off being pranged/trashed/turned into a boi haus etc etc....

And how many have been accurately accounted for and properly disposed of. (regrettably there is no 'rolling on the floor laughing hysterically smilie!)

The APEC vehicles, like every other Govt. asset, including the Beech 350 King Air parked at Cairns, will just be left to rot. The pollies just walk away from projects when they become too difficult to manage. They tend to distance themselves very quickly.
Re the post above if anyone knows the fate of Kiunga Aviation C-402, I would be interested to know.
