David Clark H10-13X?

Hi,

I have a David Clark H10-13X ENC headset with 9V Battery Power and have been using a 9V rechargable battery. At the moment I am only getting about 6 hours life out of a full charge.

Can anybody tell me what sort of life that are getting from a normal alkaline battery? What about rechargable?

Thanks in advance.

Cool

The battery may have developed a "memory"?

Try deep cycling the rechargeable (ni-cad?) battery. Put a resistance - a light bulb will do - across the terminals until the battery is totally discharged, then re charge as normal.

Ni-Mh lasts me about 8-10 flight hours. No memory effect and works great. Carry around a spare off the shelf battery when things start to grumble.

Thanks for the responses so far.

How long does an off the shelf alkaline battery last? David Clarke quote up to 25hrs but this seems a little excessive.

What affects the battery life in this type of headset?

Thanks

Mine is an older model with 4 aa batteries. A company called grand cell makes rechargeable aa and aaa batteries, not sure about the 9v ones, These give a pretty good life, around the equivilant to standard alkeline batteries.

I know when using nicad batteries in things such as pagers life is very short and this is because of the lower voltage in Nicad batteries. (on a 1.5 v battery it is around 1.2 v fully charged, not sure on the figures with the 9 v one)

A question of a different kind. Apparently there are studies underway to check whether or not the noise cancelling headsets cause more harm than the normal headsets because with the noise cancelling ones there are two sound frequencies (the original noise plus the cancelling noise).

Are there any thoughts on this, or even better does anyone know if such studies have been completed?

I would be very surprised if a noise cancelling headset caused more problems than a standard set; I thought they just used a signal from both sides of the mic 180 deg out of phase to get rid of the cockpit noise but not affect the speech (and other noises!) coming from your mouth.
Basically if it sounds quieter in your earphones, it is quieter.
As always I'm ready to stand corrected, but it sounds like those studies might be of the kind that spend years working out things like 'eating too much makes you fat!'

My H10-13x must be one of the original models - The battery module holds 6 x 1.5v AA batteries (total 9 volts). They seem to go on for ever - but I would say in excess of 40 hours and maybe up to 50 hours. I should keep a record in my logbook to track the usage!

I buy a box of 40 AA Digitor Alkaline batteries from Dick Smith Electronics (about $25), with the last box lasting me well over a year.

If you are using the new model, which I understand utilises a single 9 volt (expensive) battery, the overall capacity of the battery is far less, therefore the life for one battery would also be less.

I have also purchased a David Clark accessory - a spare battery pack holder and pouch, so if it seems that the batteries are on their way out (an uncomfortable sensation) I can easily swap over in flight.

As for ANC/ENC headsets actually being harmful, I can only say that I always feel more relaxed and less tired at the end of a flight than I did when using my old H10-80's - good as the 10-80's were they just don't compare with my 10-13X's - even when used in passive mode.

Hope this helps.

the H10-13x is the best headset I have worn to date.

I also feel more relaxed after flying wearing them. even after flying for three hours, it feels like you have flown for one hour.

Turbantime have you actually used the above mentioned headsets????

has anyone heard of any real results from tests done??
it would be interesting to find out. but in the meantime nothing will stop me from using them.

The David Clark ANR headsets are very good. But... 25hours on a 9V? I got sucked in by that one as well! I can get max 15 out of an alkaline and about 10 out of a rechargeable.
There were a few other brands around when I bought mine. I looked at the BOSE ones as well but the $$ was too high and theft was also a consideration where I am. I can leave the DC's on the yoke and know one is really the wiser that they are any different from a pair of 13.4's.

I spoke to a dealer about the ANR and Softcomm types and he looked at me and said "Mate, Korean headsets made for Korean heads, let the price tell you" (sorry if anyone has those types! )

I paid $1150 +GST for mine (10-13XL) but they are cheaper than that now I believe.
PM me if you want to know the dealer I bought mine from.

Cheers,
GA Driver
