There are many winners, as in most conflicts, they just aren't on the battlefield.

Eisenhower cautioned against this. We should have listened.

Donald Trump is attacking CNN after the network aired the full statement from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council saying it achieved a “great victory” and forced the U.S. to accept its 10-point plan.

In a furious response, Trump called CNN’s reporting a “FRAUD” and demanded a retraction, and said "authorities are looking to determine whether or not a crime was committed"—despite the network simply relaying Iran’s official statement.

Going back to the warcrime issue of civilians standing on bridges etc, I think the difference is in the Iraq war Saddam used western hostages against their will which would be deemed a war crime.

Iran simply asked for volunteers who turned up to protect their land, which, as they were freely there of their own free will, I cannot see that being a warcrime unless forced.

Tu.114 8th April 2026 08:37

In 2015, a contract was agreed upon with Iran. The Western powers agreed to lift many of the sanctions placed on Iran, while Iran agreed to put its nuclear programme under international supervision. The Strait of Hormuz was open and trade flowed freely.

Today, a ceasefire was agreed upon with Iran. I´ll repeat the image posted by ORAC:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....6b23c0dda3.png

Iran agrees not to seek nuclear armament, albeit without international supervision. The sanctions are to be lifted entirely. The strait of Hormuz is no longer closed, but subject to restrictions. And so on.

If this is what a win looks like in Mr Trumps books, then I do not want to see what constitutes a defeat for him. This utter failure is entirely of Mr Trumps own making.

In the context of international law, it makes no difference if it was voluntary or not. In this instance it was solicited, so would be considered a warcrime, one in a long list during recent conflicts.
Like all laws there is small print, which is why lawyers exist.
The only "court" this is being tried in is the court of public opinion, which has somewhat more flexible interpretations of what is acceptable or not.

Iran International English:

Iran’s Farsi-language version of its ceasefire proposal includes “acceptance of enrichment,” a provision not present in English versions, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday, highlighting discrepancies in how Tehran is presenting its terms.

But if the targets themselves were not valid military targets (power stations. bridges, civilian infrastructure) then what's war-crimeiest? Targeting them, or enlisting the populace to stand alongside them?

It’s not just about law. It’s about whether you would launch an attack on a bridge that you knew was full of women and children - for whatever reason. I believe basic morality puts the target off-limits.

That is a good question, which is why I made my "terms and conditions apply" reference.
Like we saw in Gaza, hospitals and public infrastructure was targeted with enthusiasm.
The get out of jail free card is justifying that civilian infrastructure is being used for military purposes, or to conceal military targets.

When the IDF bombed the university, the justification was that they were running programmes to further ballistic missile/drone development.
All that is needed is suitable "intelligence" to justify the action, thereafter it is finger-pointing, and we know which way the average X user likes to point fingers these days.

Right and wrong vary on individual perspective.
As the proverb goes, all's fair in love and war.

It is only in hindsight that we tend to appreciate a lack of foresight.

Ghalibaf to lead Iranian side in Friday talks with US - ISNA

Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will lead Tehran’s delegation in talks with the United States on Friday, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported on Wednesday.

The agency said US Vice President JD Vance would head the American side.

Iran’s proposed 10-point framework for the talks covers not only the nuclear program and regional security, but also primary and secondary US sanctions imposed on Iran over nearly 45 years, according to the report.

The Israeli's have been quite proficient at appearing to agree with proposals, while being able to exploit something on the periphery to ensure that hostilities continue.
How many attempts did it take in Gaza for a ceasefire to stick? And Iran are far better equipped to continue since there is no appetite for a ground invasion.
