Zymurgy is the second to last word in Webster's. The last word is Zythum: "A malt beverage brewed by ancient Egyptians"

(Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary -1983)

I'll drink to that.

ZYZYGY, meaning a alighnment, used to be the last word in older dictionaries if memmory serves.
Interesting excercise for you ORAC.
Try and find the Deer Bot fly, this critter had a mention as the fastest living creature in all old encyclopedias.
It apparently had a airspeed of 400mph, I kid you not.

Supersonic!!

Encyclopedia Smithsonian: Insect flight -

"A fascinating account of the speed of a Deer Bot fly, Cephanomvia pratti, was made by entomologist C. H. T. Townsend in 1926 by estimating the speed of the fly as it flew between mountaintops. Townsend published his findings, stating that the fly was able to accomplish a speed of 818 miles an hour".

Alas:

"Among entomologists, Townsend is known for two things-discovery of the insect carrier of tropical fever in the Andes, and a big mistake about deer bot flies that was perpetuated in scholarly journals for years,"......"His incorrect calculations were quoted in journals for years. No one questioned what would actually happen to the soft tissue of a deer's nose if an insect hit it at 600 miles per hour," Richman says.

".....It was not until recent years that the original claim was subjected to further investigation, and a paper was published showing that......(he)........ had made a simple arithmetical mistake in writing up his findings. Corrected for this mistake. The figure was around 60 mph. Aroused by this the team then measured the deer bot's flight with modern apparatus, and it seems the fly is hard pressed to reach 30 mph.

Perhaps what Townsend mistook for a Deer Bot Fly was in fact a "rod"?

PS: I'm just away for a Zythum. Cheers.

Practical Tip

Here is some advice for those of you who are incompetent in spelling/too lazy to read over what they've written. Just cut and past your post into Microsoft Word, then run the spell and grammar check over it. When finished cut it from Word and paste it in your post. Too easy, and then you can stop complaining about those who try to help you develop a more credible argument why pointing out your mistakes. Isn't there a saying, "Our critics are out greatest friends as they show us our faults so that we may fix them?"

Civilian

I hope we don't lose you. Being an "old fart" and totally out of date technically, I contribute little but read this forum assiduously. I post much more on the BBC political forums to act as a counterweight to the mass of semi-literate, lefty-trendy, Guardianese guff you read there. And, although Auntie Beeb has the vapours if you use any "industrial" language, the general standard of literacy is poor. Never use one word when a paragraph will do! And Ppruners are better informed on their chosen subject than the "Today" disputers.

BEagle

You sent me rushing to my Kennedy's Shortbread Eating Primer. You are, Sir, a Scholar and a Gentleman. At my school (in NZ) the Latin master was conjugating the Present Indicative of the intransitive verb "Adipiscor" (to reach or attain - First Conjugation). It was during the war and he was a retread the wrong side of 70 with a high, rather ecclesiastical intonation.

"Adipiscor", he intoned, "Adipiscaris..." At which moment a boy named Carter entered the classroom, very late. "Adipiscatur.."
The somewhat startled Carter said "No sir! The Head has just beaten the **** out of me!"
