Hellenic Airforce Pilots killed in crash while fighting fires

Three days of mourning for pilots killed fighting fires in Evia

Greece's defence ministry has confirmed two Greek air force pilots died when their plane crashed while fighting fires on the island of Evia.

The Greek defence ministry has declared a three-day period of mourning in the armed forces for the pilots who lost their lives fighting fires over Evia.

They have been named as 34-year-old Commander Christos Moulas and his co-pilot, 27-year-old Pericles Stefanidis.

Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said they lost their lives "in the line of duty... while attempting to protect the lives and property of citizens, as well as the environment of our country".

"Our thoughts are with their families and colleagues, to whom we extend our most sincere condolences."

Looks like the right wing hit a tree and that the right float departed the airframe.
Whether or not there was other damage to the wing and aileron is difficult to see.
RIP.

RIP

A long time ago I was fortunate enough to be invited onto a CL215 for a training flight at Goose Bay during the fire season with the crew of Tanker 252. The dangers of water bombing were shown to me in a quietly understated way. In the current mass of forest fires in North America and Europe a whole bunch of dedicated people will be flying their backsides off in order to protect their people. RIP todays accident crew.

Could well be a float. But in swinging backwards then away it may well have damaged the aileron, or jammed it close to fully upwards.
