Illegal Salvage from Repulse and Prince of Wales Wrecks
Indeed - but much of the anger expressed here and elsewhere is based on the War Grave aspect
The ships have been down there since 1942 - it's hard to make a case that the UK valued them other than as a grave site.

The controlled and regulated recovery of gold from HMS Edinburgh is entirely consistent with respecting a War Grave. It removes any further reason to disturb the site.
The trouble is SASless the UK MOD are a bunch of gasbags, make a noise. but let it happen, so it will not surprise me if they stand by and let them do it, Just as they have done in the past with the Dutch etc... personally I would seize the barge, scrap it and send the crew home.

The irony in this is the Dutch did nothing then this happened

Hmm sounds like gold=good and armour = bad?
Actually the real worry is that HM Treasury might find out that all this old, UK owned armour has a serious value..................
What about the Albanian gold hoard which was sunk in the Corfu Channel in 1943 and never (according to the Albanians) recovered?

It's a tad ironic given that the UK has been plundering grave sites and other sensitive cultural areas for hundreds of years. The grave site in this case is the ocean and it is very likely the remains of the dead have been dispersed to individual atoms throughout the water and the plants and animals and bacteria that live in it. At some point a piece of fried cod will likely have a bit of one who went down with these ships.

Oh, now the UK has property concerns? Perhaps they should not leave it strewn about or unguarded.
Trust me, taking a hacksaw near the USS Arizona will be met straightaway with an intervention.

The US? The country founded by BRITISH COLONISTS? Not the insult you figured it was. There's enough irony piling up here to build a warship.
