Very well made.
Thank you, someone else who saw it, pointlessly sending troops over the top against overwhelming odds to be beaten back, the futility of it all was summed up by the last assault when terms had already been agreed and the war was over at 11am, to simply satisfy the whims of a senior officer by sending his troops to their deaths on a bull**** pretext while he was safely ensconced in his chateau at the rear.

If the Great War was futile [as is the theme of many].is not Ukraine v. Russia not equally futile, and, if not, why not?

The futility was well summed up by Black Adder 4.

So pray tell me, if WW1 wasn’t futile, what was gained from it?

I did ask my question first, to which you have not answered.
However, out of courtesy:
The fact that we are free to debate, and in English, not German. In August 1914 Great Britain did not have a "do nothing" option..

The difference is Ukraine and Russia have not come to a peace agreement, so no futile assault has been launched 15 minutes before the end of the war.

This account of one American action the night of 10-11 November might rise to the level of "futility".

Thus the perceived futility judgement refers not to WW 1 but the final 15 minutes.
Happy to conced that.
