I thought that it got over the idea of needless or pointless loss very well - that's the futility. Survival of the individual is not futile, but then, very rarely is it truly in the individuals gift to ensure it happens. And that is reinforced throughout.

Thank you, someone else who saw it, pointlessly sending troops over the top against overwhelming odds to be beaten back, the futility of it all was summed up by the last assault when terms had already been agreed and the war was over at 11am, to simply satisfy the whims of a senior officer by sending his troops to their deaths on a bull**** pretext while he was safely ensconced in his chateau at the rear.
