Just a heads up All Quiet on the Western Front remake

Will be screening on Friday 28th on Netflix worldwide and some cinemas and looks pretty impressive, ( over 2 hours long) The original was good so I have high hopes. Link and some of the trailers also in top link. it is directed by the chap that did Deutchland 83.

Is this a remake of the original, or a remake of the remake?

Interesting choice of cover image. Do the Germans associate poppies with WW1?

The new version looks awful.

maximise the 'drama' yet minimal reality - won't be watching anything after the trailer

Once banned in Germany as an Anti-War book .
Is it not really a book to prepare a young mind for War ?
The next generation of conscripts should read it , so they won’t be shocked when they get to the front .

LOL - Dunkirk from a couple of years ago got generally good reviews but it was absolutely dire - we were glad that we did not have to pay to watch it and certainly would not watch again

The German equivalent of our poppy is the forget-me-not (Vergißmeinnicht).

So far…WOW. Very very good at getting over the futility of it all and really well told.
Surpasses the original telling by a long chalk, highly recommended by me..

i would love to read what other thought.

There was no futility. Survival, or seeking it, is not futile.

I suppose the closer to the mud, blood, and gore one gets....the stronger your feeling of futility might be.

If you want a really big dose of futility try Remarque's other book, " A Time to Live and a Time to Die". The end will leave you thinking what was the point of all that effort?

I thought it was absolutely brutal. The french counter attack especially so.

I thought that it got over the idea of needless or pointless loss very well - that's the futility. Survival of the individual is not futile, but then, very rarely is it truly in the individuals gift to ensure it happens. And that is reinforced throughout.

Very well made.

I don't think I have ever come across that meaning, Mogwi. Can you give me any link ?
