AFC? I wish!

Thankyou for your votes of confidence in my ability but let’s just say a few years in Oman has helped my rack!

Recognition for a job well done, absolutely. Therefore not recognized for a job well done, well that might cause a bit of a murmur especially when some of those awards go to individual's that do not appear to have done as much as those passed over. Understood that a line has to be drawn somewhere. Would be nice if it was a straight line and not quite so wavy.

Oh please. Harry looks like his uncle. That's where those genes come from.

"[Diana] hadn’t even met Hewitt when Harry was conceived [in 1984]."
is one quote I have found.

I doubt that anyone here would want their parentage disputed in public.

I truly hope you do not refer to the second son of HM, being his uncle...

Well I got two pieces of paper from Jock Stirrup and Sky Walker 10 years apart. First one was for spending 6 months out of trade proving a certain maintenance computer system could get correct data applied from a fleet selection from a totally corrupted system that was in place. Second was all work done in mostly my time that ended up with an end of service ceremonial scheme, end of service ceremonial brochure and a **** load of quick fund raising that possibility added 5k ish to a fund to help a Sqn mate in a mater of weeks. Bob V knows what. Told I had the award a week before OOA and I had already stuck my notice in. Last time I wore No 1s to get it was two days before ID card was thrown in. Bob could gauge of my efforts were worth recognition or not.

Not promotions with cash. Piece of metal or paper. With tea and cakes. My paper was for going further than others. My medals were all ops or long gong. One jubilee gong for 50. Ops medals were both ones where incoming was a daily part of living, certainly the second.

Sad to say. a commendation to be polite is worth jack in the real world, just as my good show and well done.

Think about it you saved the RAF a fortune and got a bit of paper to hang up in the bog for your efforts... who saw who coming.

Indeed it is and I didn't expect either of them, however your good show and well done was you doing your job properly. Mine was for going way beyond what I had to do. The paper means nothing. What I managed to produce with what I did will out last me and my descendant's will be able to see real world things I did. Can you say that?

We had a Chief at Odiham designed a ground running rig for the Puma thus saving a fortune in having to install the engines in an aircraft to test them, The manufacturers said it couldn’t be done, but he did it anyways, and he was awarded a commendation and £25, the RAF saved a fortune and I believe sold the design to the manufacturer who sold it on to operators.. He had gone round to the Staishes to collect his award, was so disgusted by the whole affair, he spotted the cheque on a desk, he picked it up and walked out.. He had designed some other test stands, the RAF never saw those.

I can say my descendants can see things I have done in the future, but as I will have gone it will mean nothing to me.

Will to my future offspring, so that makes me happy. You want to be Scrooge, well that's your lookout.

I agree with you Cat Techie in that it is nice to get recognition amongst your peers and it does indeed mean that you are acknowledged formally in the Service’s history. I also agree that the certificates are a bit naff in that they normally reside on your “I love me wall” somewhere in your house which few rarely see. As a recipient of a 2-star, 3-stars’ and 4-star commendation over my career, then I think we could learn much from our Allies. They have a very simple pin badge that they wear on No 2 and No 1 equivalent uniform, here are some examples.

This is the Indian Air Force’s Chief of Air Staff (COAS) Commendation badge:

Here it is being worn on this female Flt Lt’s uniform on her left lapel pocket:

The RAAF do it even better with a big and small version (big for No 1 and small for No 2) and they wear it on the right lapel on the No 2 shirt. They also have bronze, silver and gold for 2, 3 and 4 star level commendation. They really have thought this through and the RAF would do well to think along the same lines (both Gen Y and Gen Z thrive on visual recognition - so this is defo Next Gen Air Force stuff).

So if any of the RAF’s Senior Leadership Team read this - there is an idea for you. Very simple, very smart and very next generation…

I’m afraid they just blew the budget on renaming various ranks.
