Gainful Employment..?

I can't see in the job description what is to be "acquired" by the post holder:

Head of Acquisition for the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier Programme

Employer

Ministry of Defence

Sector

Central Government

Location

Bristol, with frequent travel

Salary

£90k

ClosingDate

16/06/2014

Ad-ref

GS16084

Description

The Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers will be the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy and will represent a step change in capability, enabling the delivery of increased strategic effect and influence around the world.

This is one of the most significant projects ever undertaken within the UK defence sector and will shape its defence capability for the next 25 years. In raw statistics the ships will be 65,000 tonnes at full displacement over three times the size of the current Invincible Class Aircraft Carriers and with embarked squadrons of F35B Lightning II jets will put Britain back into the premier league of maritimefixed wing aviation. The ability to operate a full range of UK helicopters means that we will have enormous versatility. In terms of size and scale they will measure 56m from keel to masthead, which is four metres taller than Niagara Falls. In terms of economic impact £1.6BN worth of sub contracts for work on these ships have now been placed with companies across most regions in the UK

As Head of Acquisition you will lead this flagship programme which will see the introduction of the biggest and most powerful surface warships ever constructed for the Royal Navy. To meet this challenge you will need to be an excellent leader of people, have a track record in dealing with complex, fast moving environments and have a clear focus on delivering projects to time and to budget. Getting this right is clearly vital so strong programme management, stakeholder engagement and an understanding of engineering principles will be critical.

Good to know it's keel to masthead is 4m taller than The Niagara Falls. I had been a bit concerned about the overall dimensions for a while now.

A strange comparator for unit of size - normally it's relative to the size of Wales, the Isle of Wight or Luxemburg, with height being related to Nelson's Column...

But how many double-decker buses can one park on the flight deck, and how does that relate to the area in football pitches (of which I have no concept or interest). More importantly how many olympic swimming pools of water will be flushed down the ship's lavatories during the course of a deployment to the South China Sea?

Perhaps it is these comparative facts that need to be acquired so the Sun can publish them?

One of the points identified in recent reports on why DE&S struggles with large projects was the quality of the Prog and Project managers. I appreciate 90K is not a insignifcant wage, but when considering the size of the programme, the overruns already being identified and the risk associated with delivering this capability as a whole, would this salary being offered attract the calibre of individual required?

The salary being offered is the same as the 'spin doctor' hired for Bernard Gray............

They just need to trawl through any of the carrier/F35 threads and they will find no end of self-proclaimed experts/know-it-alls who will fit the job requirement perfectly. A quick 'PM' or two and Roberts your father's brother - you have a shortlist of candidates with all the answers.

Of course, not all are UK citizens and some are still at school but beggars can't be choosers....

£90K should suit a retired Admiral admirably - on top of a pension, natch.

So, something you've never seen is bluer than something else you've never seen.

suit a retired Admiral
Can't be one of them - there's a chance they might know what they were talking about!

This has got retired General (ideally ex-Infantry) or retired Air Marshal (must not have helicopter/Harrier/maritime/joint experience) written all over it.

It's called projecting airpower to third world nations

Or reducing UK Defence to a third world force by draining the budget.

They do seem in rather a hurry. I wonder if they are looking for a scapegoat?

Wrathmonk, Cavalry surely? Get rid of all those grubby aero-whatsits and kit out the hangar deck as stables.

Given Admiral Nelson was a famous boaty type chap it does seem odd that it wasn't used as the comparitor for height, especially as Niagara Falls and Nelson's Column are near as damnit the same height. Perhaps it's bad form in the Admiralty to say that something is bigger than Nelson's Column?

Anyhoo, very tempted to apply, just for sh**s and giggles.
