Just how much money is the nation, bankrupted by the policies of Bliar, Brown and the rest of nuLabor's liars, pi$$ing down the sink so that a few sweaty jockstrapping oafs can run, jump, splash about and throw things? All so a few politicians can preen themselves.

Utter b£oody nonsense and very far from the Olympic ideal. Makes the 1936 Berlin Olympics look like a vicarage tea party....

Thought 21 had been given the chop?
That would be awkward, since 21 is the parent regt to 22. It hasn't happened.

BEagle

What is happening to London / UK is just what happened to Sydney.

As soon as the Olympic committee said "the best games ever", everyone bar the workers were off, gone, never to be seen again.

And because so much time, effort, planning et al were put into the 2000 Olympics, no one had done any other State planning for quite a few years so all of a sudden, everything stopped, no infrastructure plans, building and the State suffered a severe down turn. And of course they ended up with a few White Elephant Stadiums.

Not saying london will suffer as much but I reckon you will have a hang over of some sort.

BEagle and 500N,

Exactly what Mrs C and I were saying this evening. Sure we could spend all that money on something better for our future.

Shall we do immigration, HS2 and Badger culling next?

My Antipodean chums tell me they've never seen as much tumbleweed as blows around the Olympic facilities, all of which were supposed to be in regular use after the event.

For two weeks Sydney looked spectacular, and now they are paying for it. The Greeks are if anything paying even more.

The Legacy that is left after the Olympics is not one I would want and has tainted my view after watching so many countries spend billions to win it and then suffer.

Tumbleweed ? I like that.

We have a trade show there every 2 years, the place is deserted even with all the cars / people that come to our show. It is a great white concrete and asphalt elephant, used occasionally for sports games and trade shows.

I understand that those of the 13 500 involved will really welcome the opportunity to be involved in the event, especially the security ones who may even get to see some games.

Well that's what the man on the box said.

I trust my terminal, annual and resettlement leave will remain intact.

If not, I may start taking pot shots at sweaty gym queens.

I'm looking forward to reading the ROE for our armed guards. Imagine three scenarios:
One of us sees someone in the crowd and have reason to believe he's carrying a bomb. We open fire and kill an innocent.

One of us sees someone carrying a weapon, but can't be sure so don't open fire. The individual than shoots into the crowd killing three women and a child before we can drop him.

One of us sees somneone about to open fire with a real weapon and drop him before he's harmed anyone.
You tell me the outcome of those three situations...

Don't worry, no one is going to be given a gun and plonked in the middle of London. You'd have to be a bit Geoff Mental to even think that was an option.....

The issue here is that it'll be a tedious ball ache for those that get dicked with it and not that SAC Scroggins is going to be playing Bodie & Doyle round the East End of London

Surely you're not suggesting they're only using the military to be free ticket collectors, then? You mean using the troops to do for free what security firms would charge handsomely for? You mean we're just digging the government out of another hole?

OMG! I wanted to be Bodie!

No, APG may be right. From the Police Professional Website:

Up to 13,500 military personnel will be on duty in London and across the country during next year’s Olympics, more than the 9,500 deployed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence announced yesterday (December 15).

During the 17-day period of the Games 7,500 will provide security at the 150 venues, while HMS Ocean will be based at Greenwich and HMS Bulwark in Weymouth Bay.

Around 5,000 servicemen and women with specialist capabilities including bomb disposal and dog teams will provide support to the police and other civil authorities, in addition to a 1,000-strong unarmed contingency force ready for deployment in case of an “Olympics-related civil emergency”. There will also be 1,000 personnel providing logistical support.

So,
1,000 is the contingency force. The Red Cross tent, in other words.
5,000 are the plods and dogs and IED disposal.
7,500 will provide Security. What do they do if they don't have guns? Bravely stand in front of the crowds and take the bullet for some sweaty jock-strapper? Or is it back to pick helves?

Perhaps some of you guys could drive the Underground too.
But don't expect the £50,000 p.a they will be getting.

According to Newsnight earlier this week, security for this pathetic event will now cost the British tax payer £550m! When quizzed as to why this had jumped from the original budget of £282m, the said minister said that the initial estimate was calculated by QUOTE: "sticking a finger in the air as we had no way of calculating it".

It makes my blood boil. Just what is the point in hosting an event like this when you can NEVER recover this amount of money regardless of how many actually attend.

There should be an 'Olympic Surcharge Tax' on all tickets that are sold so as to recover some of the costs.
