The Underground drivers are getting up to £1,200 for working during the Olympics:

"Tube drivers will get a cash bonus of up to £1,200 for working during the Olympic Games, it was revealed today".

"All 2,300 drivers on the Tube, who earn a basic salary of £42,750, will receive a flat-rate £500 bonus. But complex confidential agreements seen by the Evening Standard - including special rates for the Olympics opening ceremony and overtime paid at £32 an hour - mean drivers will receive more than double that."

"A spokesman for the negotiating team at Aslef, the train drivers' union, said: "This is a great settlement and will ensure the successful deliverance of train services during the Olympics.""

Which is union speak for "We would have really f**ked them over during the Olympics otherwise".

£1,200 is slightly more than a Private will take home for a whole month, after tax.

So what duties will be undertaken? how long his the training? and will we need to take out our own insurance to cover these tasks. we dont want a terrorist incident in a game stadium so lets put 7500 easy targets on display.
clueless leadership

Tents, crap organisation, crap food, and a ton of standing around, count me in!!!!

I, for one, won't be going anywhere near an Olympic stadium or similar during the Games. Why? Because our home-grown nutters will be very attracted to such venues with the intention of vapourising themselves, and bystanders, for posterity. And they don't have to be inside a venue to create carnage, just nearby.

No thanks.

On reading one of the back issues of HeliOps, there was an article about the support for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy with involving everyone from the Aeronautica Militare Pelicans to the Guardia di Finanza's AB412 and the Ejercitio's AB212/412 to the Vigile del Fuoco AB412 and even the Corpo di Forestale assisted.

It was also interesting to read that the Italians had deployed a Patriot battery or two, a dedicated satellite or two re tasked over the area, had the NATO AWACS assigned as well as Typhoons on alert. I can't remember off hand how many troops assigned to the event either but I'd say it was bordering on 10,000.
